Hounds Start GLVC Title Defense Saturday

14 UIndy Greyhounds at McKendree Bearcats
Saturday, Sept. 21, 2 p.m. ET, Lebanon, Ill.

ON TAP
The two-time defending conference-champion UIndy Greyhounds put their 18-game GLVC winning streak on the line when they open league play with a road clash against a hungry McKendree Bearcats squad Saturday afternoon.

ABOUT McKENDREE
The Bearcats have started the season 0-2 after enduring losses to a pair of GLIAC teams, both from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. After dropping the opener at Northern Michigan, 30-9, McKendree lost a close one at home to Michigan Tech last weekend. The Bearcats pulled to within five points with a late touchdown and got the ball back with a chance to win, but they ultimately turned the ball over on downs to seal the loss, 24-19.

With the graduation of all-conference quarterback Reece Metcalf last season, McKendree has entrusted its offense to redshirt-freshman Turner Pullen. As a senior in high school, Pullen passed for more than 3,000 yards and rushed for 1,000 more while setting the Illinois single-season record for touchdown passes (41). He has completed 52 percent of his passes through his first two collegiate games, throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions.

HOUNDS vs. BEARCATS
The host Bearcats are looking for their first-ever victory against UIndy, as the Hounds have taken all seven match-ups since the two first hooked up in 2012. UIndy has held McKendree to just 10 points in each of the previous two meetings, including a lopsided 48-10 Greyhound win at Key Stadium last October.

Then-freshman Toriano Clinton had a game for the ages that night, tying the program's single-game mark with five touchdowns and coming just two yards shy of another school record with 362 all-purpose yards. He had kickoff return touchdowns of 97 and 83 yards, as he also became the first Greyhound since 1983 – the first year single-game records became available – to notch two such TDs in the same game. Clinton went on to earn both Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week accolades from the GLVC, becoming the first player to garner two weekly awards from the conference on the same day.

LAST TIME OUT
Speaking of GLVC weekly honors, Clinton earned another Offensive Player of the Week nod on Monday after his performance versus Hillsdale last week. He and teammate Al McKeller combined for 317 rushing to lead the Hounds to a convincing 48-21 win in front of nearly 7,000 fans at Key. The Greyhound defense forced three turnovers on the night, with d-lineman Michael Dennison amassing two sacks and a forced fumble.

WHAT A RUSH
McKeller continues his ascent of the UIndy record books. The junior running back and reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Year passed a pair of Greyhound greats after his performance versus Hillsdale, leapfrogging both Jim Ware (1959-62) and Duddy Reeves (1975-78) into sixth place on the school's all-time rushing list. The five names above him all have 3,000-plus rushing yards to their credit, with McKeller needing just 342 more yards to join the exclusive group.

Rk Name (years) Yards
1. Klay Fiechter (2010-13) 3,809
2. Dick Nalley (1973-76) 3,559
3. Craig Jenkins (2004-06,08) 3,182
4. Andrew Walker (2014-17) 3,097
5. Marquis Tolliver (1998-02) 3,079
6. Al McKeller (2017-present) 2,658

BALL SECURITY
Through two games, UIndy is one of only eight DII teams that has yet to commit a turnover this season, continuing a recent trend. Last season, the Hounds led Division II with just 10 giveaways, marking the fifth time they ranked in DII's top 10 in the last eight years. In fact, the Hounds set the DII record for fewest giveaways in a season with six in 2011, a mark since tied (Fort Lewis, 2015) but yet unbroken.

CAREER AMBITIONS
Already the GLVC all-time leader in career passing touchdowns (83), UIndy senior quarterback TJ Edwards enters the weekend needing just 95 passing yards to break another league benchmark. The Southwest Baptist transfer currently tops all active Division II players in both career passing yards (8,702) and career total yards (10,200), with the latter number good for third place among all NCAA student-athletes in all divisions.

RANK & FILE
UIndy moved to No. 14 in the latest AFCA Division II Top 25, moving up one spot for the second straight week. The Hounds have now made 27 consecutive appearances in the weekly rankings, upping their program record for longest stretch in the top 25.

Currently, UIndy is one of eight Super Region Three schools in the rankings. Ferris State tops all SR3 squads at No. 2, followed by top-10 schools Ouachita Baptist (6), Northwest Missouri State (7) and Grand Valley State (10).
