INDIANAPOLIS – With both record-setting and event winning performances at the UIndy Collegiate Challenge last weekend, the Great Lakes Valley Conference awarded the track & field teams three of the four GLVC Indoor Athlete of the Week awards on Tuesday.
Berenice Cleyet-Merle garnered her second award of the season in the Women's Track category, while
Jacob Stamm (Men's Track) and
Katrinia Hopkins (Women's Field) were awarded their first conference honors of the season.
Cleyet-Merle re-set the UIndy record in the women's 800 meter on Saturday, as the graduate student-athlete dropped almost three seconds in the event from her previous best time. Cleyet-Merle's victory was also by a 14-second margin in the event. Her 2:13.13 time in the event currently ranks second overall in Division II, according to TFRRS. This week awards Cleyet-Merle's second GLVC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor, the last being on Dec. 19. Cleyet-Merle also finished third overall in the women's 400 meter on a final time of 58.68 at the Collegiate Challenge.
Stamm's victory in the men's mile was the lone event winner for the men's team in the Collegiate Challenge. The junior topped the event by three seconds, as he crossed the finish line at a time of 4:21.84. This marks not only Stamm's first GLVC weekly honor of the season, but also as the Greyhounds' first Men's Athlete of the Week honor this indoor season.
Hopkins' Collegiate Challenge performance consisted of two different top-three finishes, enough to win her first GLVC Weekly honor in the Indoor season. Hopkins finished second in the women's Weight Throw and third in the women's shot put, the only school-affiliated student-athlete in the meet to accomplish that feat. The junior's best distances included a 17.25 meter toss in the weight throw, and a 13.73 meter throw in the shot put. Hopkins' garnered both her first GLVC weekly honor this season, and the first for any Greyhound women's field student-athlete. This now marks the women's track & field team four GLVC Athlete of the Weeks honors during this indoor season.
The Greyhound track & field teams will be back in action this weekend, hosting the two-day Tom Hathaway Distance Challenge in the ARC. Both Friday (Jan. 24) and Saturday (Jan. 25) will kick off competition at 11 a.m.
