INDIANAPOLIS – After a successful Greyhound Invitational last weekend, the UIndy track & field teams took on a two-day competition on Friday and Saturday in the ARC. In an unconventional meet with longer distances, the Greyhounds topped six events and finished top three in many more.
The women ran away with five victories during the weekend, led by junior
Katrinia Hopkins. Hopkins was featured in two events, as she placed first in the women's shot put and second in the women's weight throw. Hopkins reached a distance of 13.82 meters in her victory and 17.09 meters in the weight throw. Indianapolis also excelled in the distance events over the weekend, as
Madelyn Miller finished the women's 3000 meter in a season-best time, while also taking the win in the event on a time of 10:34.29.
Berenice Cleyet-Merle continued her dominance as a Greyhound student-athlete, as she claimed a first-place finish in her only individual event of the weekend in the mile. Cleyet-Merle's final time in the event was 4:48.89.
Keri Ertel and
Brittney Clark rounded out the rest of the women's victories in the weekend, claiming an event each. Clark topped the pole vault on a final height of 3.59 meters, while Ertel beat out the second-place finisher by one-tenth of a second in the 60 meter hurdles on a final time of 9.00 seconds.
The lone Greyhound victor on the men's side belonged to
Justin Blakey, who tossed his shot as far as 14.93 meters in his best distance. Blakey's mark was a half-meter ahead of his teammate,
Nic Ray, who finished as the event's runner-up at 14.43 meters. UIndy included numerous finishers that also placed within the top three, including six events where Indianapolis ended as the runner-up. One of these finishes featured
Chandler Martin, who reached a season-best height of 1.96 meters in the high jump.
Treyton Arnold also claimed a season-best height, as the freshman reached a whopping 4.77 meters in the men's pole vault on his way to second place overall.
The UIndy track & field teams will be next seen in ARC next weekend for the Greyhound Invitational on-campus. That meet will commence on Saturday, Feb. 1 and will kick off at 12 p.m.
