NEW ORLEANS, La. – After breaking two records on the track last week, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) ranked the UIndy women's track & field team at No. 8 in Division II on Tuesday. The program's new week three ranking keeps them as the highest GLVC team and second-highest team in the Midwest Region.
The Greyhounds currently have nine events where they hold an individual in the top-25 rankings, four of them being in the top eight in Division II. Both
Lauren Bailey and
Berenice Cleyet-Merle hold a second-place ranking in an event; Bailey sitting second in the 3000 meter (9:28.24) and the 5000 meter (16:17.70) while Cleyet-Merle stands as the runner-up in the mile (4:40.49). Cleyet-Merle also ranks eighth overall in the 800 meter (2:11.62), and Bailey's final top-25 individual ranks is located in the mile at 22nd (4:57.37).
Keri Ertel remains as the only other ranked member of the track to be within the top-25, reaching up to 18th in Division II in the 60-meter hurdles at 8.78.
The field student-athletes have excelled this season as well, owning three events with top-25 honors.
Brittney Clark leads the Hounds with her own top-10 ranking, seeded seventh overall in the pole vault with a height of 3.97 meters.
Katrinia Hopkins holds the other two rankings for UIndy, sitting 17th in the weight throw at 18.12 meters and 20th in the shot put at 14.19 meters.
The Greyhounds currently are the second-highest ranked team from the Midwest Region in the National Rankings, as GVSU sits at the top as the number one team in the nation. The Midwest is also represented by Tiffin (10th), Southwest Baptist (11th), and Saginaw Valley State (18th).
The UIndy track & field teams will be back in action this weekend in two different meets. One event is the GVSU Big Meet, being held on both Feb. 14 and Feb. 15. Both days are scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. The Greyhounds will have Senior Day on Feb. 15 in the ARC, hosting the UIndy Team Invitational. UIndy's home meet will start at 12 p.m. The next USTFCCCA ranking is scheduled to be released on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
