INDIANAPOLIS – After traveling out and competing in both Hillsdale, Mich. and South Bend, Ind., the No. 8 women's track & field team swept the honors for the GLVC Track & Field Athletes of the Week on Wednesday.
Berenice Cleyet-Merle earned her fourth GLVC Track Athlete of the Week honor, while
Katrinia Hopkins gained her second Field Athlete of the Week award this season. The Greyhounds have now combined for seven different GLVC weekly honors this winter, the other belonging to
Lauren Bailey.
Cleyet-Merle was invited to the prestigious Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame, placing fifth in the women's mile among student-athletes from the B1G and other DI conferences. Not only did she rank in the top five, but Cleyet-Merle shaved seven seconds from her own UIndy record with a time of 4:40.49, pushing past the NCAA DII Indoor Automatic standard and ranking second in DII in the event.
Hopkins' performances at the Hillsdale Wide Track Classic took the top two spots in both the shot put and weight throw. She claimed the weight title with a toss of 17.61 meters, besting the second-place finisher by almost an entire meter. Hopkins also slotted herself in the runner-up spot in the shot put, tossing 14.08 meters in her best throw. Hopkins ranks first in the GLVC in both events, good for 17th overall in the weight and 20th in the shot.
The Greyhounds will be back in action in two different locations this weekend, competing in the GVSU Big Meet and the UIndy Team Invitational. The GVSU Big Meet will run on both Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15, with both days starting at 10 a.m. The UIndy Team Invitational on Saturday will will mark Senior Day for the Greyhounds, with festivities starting at 11:15 a.m.
