INDIANAPOLIS – For the second-straight week, UIndy women's track & field student-athletes
Berenice Cleyet-Merle and
Katrinia Hopkins repeat as GLVC Athlete of the Week honorees, announced on Wednesday. Cleyet-Merle earned a fifth Track Athlete of the Week award this season, while Hopkins garnered her third Field Athlete of the Week honor this indoor season. This week puts the UIndy women's track & field team up to nine awards total this winter, the other belonging to junior
Lauren Bailey.
Cleyet-Merle's fifth weekly honor was based on her record-setting performance over the weekend, rewriting her own UIndy record in the women's 800 meter on Friday at the Grand Valley Big Meet. Her seven-second time-drop ranked her number one in Division II, while her 2:06 time pushed her under the NCAA automatic qualifying mark. Cleyet-Merle also took part in the record-setting Distance Relay run on Saturday, where her squad ran a final time of 11:42.87. The team of Cleyet-Merle,
Mary Watts,
Yailene Leon and Bailey shattered the previous UIndy record by 32 seconds, and now ranks eighth in all of Division II.
Hopkins' GLVC Field Athlete of the Week honor comes on the back of her sweep in women's throwing events at the UIndy Team Invitational, winning the shot put and weight throw. She won the women's shot put on a final distance of 14.37 meters, and her victorious distance of 17.77 meters took home the weight throw. The Avon, Ind., native currently ranks in the top 20 in Division II in both events.
Both UIndy track & field teams will prepare for a weekend of competition before the GLVC Indoor Championships, on both Friday (Feb. 21st) and Saturday (Feb. 22nd). Friday's events will be located at the Buckeye Tune-up, and Saturday's competition will take place at the STEEMER Showcase.
