Women’s Track & Field Maintains #7 Ranking

NEW ORLEANS – With the GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championships right around the corner, the UIndy women's track & field garnered a second-straight No. 7 DII ranking from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday. The Greyhounds still remain as the highest GLVC institution and second-highest team in the Midwest Region.

Berenice Cleyet-Merle still ranks among the best mid-distance runners in Division II, still leading the country in the women's 800 meter at 2:06.80. Cleyet-Merle also remains as a top-five student-athlete in the women's mile, her 4:40.49 time currently sits at fourth overall. The Greyhounds currently also feature Lauren Bailey among the individual ranks, sitting as the No. 2 spot in both the women's 3000- and 5000-meter races. Bailey is a little over 10 seconds from the top spot in the 3K with her 9:28.24 time, while just a mere three seconds as the No. 1 seed in the 5K at 16:17.70. Bailey also ranks 27th in the mile at a 4:55.75 time.

The women also are represented on the track by Keri Ertel in the women's 60 meter hurdles. The senior's 8.74 time ranks 23rd overall in DII. The Greyhounds also hold the No. 9 spot in the women's distance medley relay where Bailey, Mary Watts, Yailene Leon, and Cleyet-Merle ran a 11:42.87 time back on Feb. 15.

Brittney Clark remains in the top 15 for another week in the women's pole vault, sitting 12th in the nation with a height of 3.97 meters. The Greyhounds once again are represented by Katrinia Hopkins in the women's throwing events, ranking 18th in the shot put and 21st in the weight throw. Hopkins' current distances are 14.37 meters in the shot put and 18.12 meters in the weight throw.

The Greyhounds currently are the second-highest ranked team from the Midwest Region in the national poll, as Grand Valley State sits at the top as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Midwest is also represented by Tiffin (13th), Saginaw Valley State (14th) and Southwest Baptist (15th).

The UIndy track & field teams will next compete in the GLVC Indoor Track & Field Championships, located in the UIndy ARC on campus. The championships will kick off on Saturday, Feb. 29 and finish on Sunday, Mar. 1.
