NEW ORLEANS – With the NCAA DII Indoor Track & Field Championships taking place this weekend in Birmingham, Ala., the UIndy women's track & field team earned another No. 8 ranking in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) 's Week 7 rating index. After earning a third-place finish at the GLVC Indoor Championships in the crossover from February to March, three Greyhounds will look to move the Greyhounds up the ranks at NCAAs.
Another week at the top,
Berenice Cleyet-Merle still stands as DII's top women's-800 runner with her 2:06.80 time. Cleyet-Merle leads the nation by .96 seconds, while also solidifying herself in the top four of the women's mile by over five seconds at a time of 4:40.49. Junior
Lauren Bailey also appears as one of the top student-athletes in the nation, leading the women's 5000 meter on a time of 16:14.16. Bailey edged out the current second-ranked time by .17 seconds at the GLVC Championships. Bailey also remains inside DII's top three in the 3000 meter (third; 9:28.24) and 31st in the mile (4:55.75).
Brittney Clark is the final Greyhound to have qualified for the NCAA Championships this weekend, competing in the women's pole vault off her height of 3.97 meters, reaching up to 14th in the nation.
The Greyhounds currently are the second-highest ranked team from the Midwest Region in the national poll, as Grand Valley State sits at the top as the No. 1 team in the nation. The Midwest is also represented by Tiffin (10th), Saginaw Valley State (12th), Ashland (17th) and Southwest Baptist (21st).
Other Greyhounds making appearances inside DII's top 25 but will not be featured at NCAAs include UIndy's Distance Medley Relay, having a final time at GLVCs of 11:42.87 for 13th in the nation.
Katrinia Hopkins ended the year placing herself in two field events, the women's shot put and weight throw. Hopkins' 14.37 meters in the shot put earned her a ranking of 20th, while her 18.12-meter weight throw distance ranked 23rd in Division II.
The NCAA DII Indoor Championships will be the final stop for the Greyhounds this indoor season, taking place on March 13 and 14. The first event takes place at 10 a.m. on Friday.
