Edwards Headlines GLVC Postseason Awards

INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy senior Erik Edwards was dubbed the GLVC Men's Golf Player of the Year, announced by league officials Tuesday. He was also the lone Greyhound on the All-GLVC list, while teammate Spencer Klimek picked the team's GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship nomination.

Edwards is the third straight UIndy men's golfer to be named GLVC Player of the Year, joining Graham McAree (2018) and Oliver Mast (2019). Edwards also earned a spot on the All-GLVC squad based on his No. 8 regional ranking in Golfstat.

In 2019-20, Edwards played 15 rounds and compiled a 71.87 stroke average, matching the second-lowest season scoring average in program history. The Louisville, Ky., native finished 12th or better in all six events, including taking medalist honors at Ohio Dominican and Illinois Springfield, while compiling a .934 winning percentage. His opening-round 66 at UIS marked a season low – one of 11 rounds at par or better.

He led the Hounds to two team wins and one runner-up finish and was named GLVC Player of the Week on Sept. 19, good for his fifth career weekly award.

Edwards was one of three major award winners announced by the conference Tuesday, as Missouri S&T's Gustav Liljedahl was named GLVC Freshman of the Year and Mikal Guffey of McKendree earned the league's top coaching honor.

The Player, Freshman, and Coach of the Year were voted on by the league's head coaches, while the All-GLVC selections were awarded based on the most recent Golfstat top-30 regional rankings. In a typical season, the top five finishers – extended to include ties – at the GLVC Championship earn all-league merit and then the coaches conduct a vote to select the remaining five individuals to join the All-Conference team at the end of the season. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the championship meet did not occur, so the coaches voted to award the postseason laurels based on the Golfstat rankings instead.

Klimek headshotMeanwhile, Klimek (right) garnered the Hounds' Spalding Sportsmanship Award nomination for the second straight season. The Columbia City, Ind., product was one of 14 nominees announced Tuesday, with Maryville University garnering the team award. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced later this year.
