Greyhounds Prepare for GLVC Tournament Weekend

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - The No. 5 UIndy men's soccer team (12-0-3, 11-0-3 GLVC) made their way through the 2020 GLVC Men's Soccer Quarterfinal round earlier this week, taking down Illinois Springfield this last Monday night on a score of 1-0. Three days later, the Greyhounds have packed their bags and made their way out west, now looking to take on the fourth-seeded Lewis Flyers (9-5-1, 8-5-1) in the GLVC Semifinal and possibly hoist the championship trophy.

The two programs met up earlier in the regular season with the Hounds visiting Romeoville, Ill., on March 7. The Flyers were able to take a 1-0 lead after the end of the first half, but a second-half surge on offense propelled the Hounds into a 3-1 final result. Alejandro Steinwascher nailed not only the game-winning goal at the 65' mark, but less than 90 seconds later was able to knock another shot in the back of the net from a beautiful cross by Michael Tselios. The Hounds totaled nine shots in the second half alone compared to the zero shots they allowed from Lewis' offense, providing perfect defense for the back 45 minutes of the contest.

The Greyhounds have boasted one of the more impressive defense lineups in Division II, ranking inside the nation's top-10 in several categories. The Hounds currently sit as a top-four team in goals against average, only allowing a mere 0.32 goals per contest. Their 67 percent shutout percentage throws that number way down, rounding out the nation's top five as the fifth spot in shutout percentage. The team's goalkeepers have amounted to a consistent performance as the protectors, holding slightly above an 85 percent save percentage to sit as the seventh-best program in the nation in that statistical category. Dimitrios Karousos not only sits as the top goalkeeper in shutouts so far this season, but also ranks as the top goalie in Division II in minutes played during the season.

The Hounds' offense has been equally impressive in Division II with UIndy being the fifth-best team in the nation in total points. As the fourth-ranked team in assists and fifth-ranked program in goals, the Greyhounds have controlled both ends of the field consistently throughout the season. Steinwascher has sat as one of the top offensive weapons in Division II. The 2020 GLVC Offensive Player of the Year leads the nation in game-winning goals, his five game-winning scores leading into his nine goals for the third-place spot. Jakub Olczyk filled the role mid-season as the Greyhounds' top passer and delivered on that duty, ranking up to the fifth-best assist man in Division II. Olczyk found six openings for his teammates throughout the regular season.

If UIndy moves past the Flyers in the GLVC Semifinal, the Hounds will face off against either Maryville or Quincy in the GLVC Championship game. The Hounds will take on Lewis on Friday, April 23 at 2:30 p.m., making their way to Lindenwood for the contest in St. Charles, Mo.
