Hounds Maintain Top-10 Ranking Going Into Regionals

LOUSIVILLE, Ky. - After the 2021 NCAA DII Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament bracket was announced the evening prior, the No. 10 UIndy men's lacrosse team (10-2, 8-2 GLVC) stayed still at the 10th-ranked spot in the recent United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches Poll, announced Monday. The Hounds won their third-straight GLVC title on Saturday night, taking down No. 11 Lindenwood for the trophy.

Goalkeeper Austin Barnett had another fantastic performance in the conference title game over the weekend, his 15 saves was the second-highest total this season in a single game (outside his 20 against Maryville). Drew Billig and Wyatt Auyer led the team's offense in that contest with a team-high four points each. Auyer completed the hat trick in the contest in scoring three of the Hounds' 10 goals in the contest, and Billig garnered a hat trick with his three assists. 2021 GLVC Specialist of the Year Kyle Basch was one of four Greyhounds to collect three ground balls in the contest, Dougie Crawford, Jack Belobrajdic and Auyer being the other to get UIndy's offense rolling. The fourth quarter push from Auyer, Owain Braddock and Kansai Garey's goals made the difference in the event, garnering their first lead of the game and pushing a margin too high for the Lions to overcome.

The Greyhounds still hold one of the best an-up offenses across Division II programs, converting a goal on the advantage almost 48-percent of those scenarios, ranked fifth in DII. The Hounds also are a top-10 team in causing problems for defenses, ranking ninth in the league with 10.8 caused turnovers per game up to this point. Barnett still boasts a top-10 ranking individually in goals against average, only allowing 8.5 balls to pass by him per contest.

The Greyhounds were the only team from the GLVC to appear in the NCAA Tournament bracket, but Lindenwood still hands among them in the top-20 rankings. The Lions stayed at the 11th spot on the poll despite losing to UIndy in the GLVC Championship final, but now share the slot with Mount Olive.

UIndy will put their skills to the test in less than a week at the 2021 NCAA Division II Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament, their third-seeded placement will be matching up against second-seeded, fifth-ranked Wingate for a chance to move to the NCAA semifinal round. That contest will take place on Sunday, May 16 at 4 p.m. in Hickory, N.C. To buy tickets prior to the contest, click here.
