ST.CHARLES, Mo. - The UIndy women's lacrosse team earned the berth into the 2021 NCAA DII Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament with the top seed in the Midwest Region, avoiding the first round that has bounced them the last two appearances in the event. The first contest, the quarterfinal round, will be against an opponent they've seen twice already in the last four games. Their game against second-seeded, No. 2-ranked Lindenwood will kick off on Sunday, May 16 at 1 p.m. in St. Charles, Mo., the winner advancing to the NCAA semifinal round in Salem, Va.
The first rounds started the tournament early on Friday, settling the final eight teams for Sunday's contests. All eight teams can look ahead to the possibilities of who they play unless they move into the semifinal, the top four teams all being reseeded to decide the time on Friday, May 21. The winners will move onto the NCAA Championship round, fighting for a spot as the top of Division II at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 23.
The Hounds' automatic big from the GLVC Championship victory came from taking down their rival Lindenwood, who owned the top seed in the tournament. The two programs battled an even head-to-head fight until the Hounds surged five-straight unanswered goals, two of them coming from GLVC Freshman of the Year Sarah Klein. The Lion's laid 11 shots in each half at UIndy's net, Cassidy King garnering eight saves as the Greyhounds' protector. Grace Gunneson led all scorers with slamming four goals in the contest, adding an assist to set a team-high five points in the title game.
