LOUISVILLE, Ky. – UIndy freshman
Kenzee Smith was voted to the 2021 All-America First Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), as announced Tuesday. The rookie sensation recently helped the Greyhounds to a GLVC championship and an appearance in the NCAA DII Midwest Regional final.
Â
Smith racked up 23 wins in the circle this spring, good for seventh in Division II. She also ranked in the top 25 in the nation in ERA, strikeouts, complete games and hits allowed per game. The Decatur Central High School grad was particularly effective in the postseason, pitching 40 2/3 innings and earning six wins in nine appearances across the GLVC Tournament and Midwest Regional combined.
Â
Her season total of 23 pitching wins are the second most ever by a UIndy freshman behind only all-time-great Morgan Foley's total of 28 in 2013.
Â
Earlier this month, Smith was named a finalist for both the
Schutt Sports/NFCA Division II National Pitcher of the Year and the
Schutt Sports / NFCA DII National Freshman of the Year.
