INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy indoor track & field teams split forces this weekend as a handful of student-athletes went up north on Friday to the GVSU Holiday Open while more stayed put here on campus for the UIndy Winter Break Meet.
GVSU HOLIDAY OPEN
A total of five female athletes made their way up to Allendale, Mich., on Friday for competition at the Kelly Family Sports Center on the campus of Grand Valley State University.
Emily Sonderman was the top Greyhound finisher with her fifth-place mark in the 800-meter run. The Indianapolis native rolled out a time of 2:16.64 which fell only behind four NCAA Division I competitors.
A trio of Hounds took to the track and competed in the 5,000-meter run.
Melissa Spencer ran in the first heat and concluded with a 21st place finish and a new indoor personal record of 17:28.45.
Hannah Wells and
Brianna Lawson were seen in the second heat with Wells ending in 17th at 18:04.74 which is her new indoor PR as well. Lawson crossed the finish line in 22nd (18:41.88).
Finally,
Mariah Davis made an appearance in the first heat of the 3,000-meter run. In a heavy field of DI, DII, and NAIA athletes, she ended in 19th at 10:40.09.
UINDY WINTER BREAK MEET
It was
Zoe Pentecost on the women's side once again headlining action in the ARC while proving why she is one of the top weight throwers in the NCAA Division II. The Westfield, Ind., native tossed a winning mark and provisional throw this afternoon of 20.10 meters, which sets her new indoor PR and is currently the second-best toss in all of DII as of today.
Pentecost wasn't the only Greyhound to perform at a high level on Saturday. UIndy was able to dominate the long and triple jump events by taking the top spots in both.
Rebekah Mappes leapt her way to a new indoor PR and a winning mark of 5.25 meters in the long jump while her teammate
Joanna Fields was right behind in second at 5.16 meters. In the triple,
Sabrina Robison was the winning competitor with her 10.91 meter mark.
On the track,
Ailliyah Reese raced her way to a top finish in the 60-meter hurdles at 9.31 while
Hallie Montgomery also corralled first place in the 200-meter run at 26.20.
Other notable finishes for the women saw
Brittney Clark (pole vault),
Emily Bonser (shot put),
Lex Brookshire (one mile), and
Trinity Gleitz (800-meter run) all claim second place in their respective event. While the Hounds failed to crown a top thrower in the shot put, behind Bonser was Pentecost,
Claire Tabbit,
Faith Hensel,
Anne Thoman, and
MaKenna Maschino, who went third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth, respectively.
Over on the men's side, the running track saw three different Hounds bring home top finishes this afternoon at the ARC.
In the one mile,
AJ Goecker beat the field and clocked a winning time of 4:20.19 while his teammates
Harnoor Dosanjh,
Andrew Bixler,
Liam Arthur, and
Aaron Trejo went second, third, fifth, and sixth, respectively.
In the 60-meter hurdles,
Cole Hurt notched a top time of 8.63 while his teammate
DeAndre Stroud was close behind in second with a new indoor PR (8.68).
Finally,
Abdelouakil Mustapha paced himself to a winning time of 1:54.02 in the 800-meter run.
Devon Whitaker also cracked the top five with his fourth-place finish in the event.
Other notable placements on Saturday saw
Treyton Arnold (pole vault) and
Keeton Adams (shot put) bring in second place finishes in their respective event.

The Hounds will return to action after the new year beginning on Jan. 20 with the Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind.
