WHEELING, W.V.—The UIndy men's golf team crafted an historic performance this week at the West Liberty Invitational, held Monday and Tuesday at the par-71 Palmer Course at Oglebay Resort in Wheeling, W.V. The Greyhounds took home both the team and individuals while rewriting a number of program records.
Â
The UIndy five-man team combined for a final-round score of 270 and 54-hole score of 817, besting the team record in the former category by a single stroke and shattering the latter's previous mark by 23 strokes.
Â
Meanwhile, medalist
Oliver Mast broke four individual marks, including lowest 18-hole score (63), lowest 18-hole score relative to par (-8), lowest 54-hole score (198) and 54-hole score relative to par (-15).
Â
Despite a stellar two rounds on Monday, the Hounds found themselves two strokes back of Midwest-rival Findlay heading into Tuesday's final round. The Greyhound quintet responded with a record-setting final 18 holes to pass and ultimately run away from a talented Oilers lineup.
Â
"I am so proud of this group," said Head Coach Brent Nicoson. "They were so solid from start to finish. Obviously anytime we can set school scoring records, it's a great event. This was a total team effort, and hopefully we can carry this over as we head into the postseason."
Â
Individually, Mast had a tournament to remember, racking up 19 birdies on the week and carding a bogey-free final round. His 54-hole score of 198 bested the previous school record low by four shots – a mark that has now been tied or broken three separate times by three different players in last two seasons.
"Oliver has been a great leader all season long and I am so proud of his effort this week," added Nicoson. "Anytime you can tie school records and put your name along side some of our best players in the history of our program, it's a special week."
Â
Joining Mast on the all-tournament team was senior
CJ Jones. The Ball State transfer finished at -8, including a six-under 65 in round two.
Â
Keegan Bronnenberg (-7) and
Cam Carroll (-3) landed in the top 10, placing seventh and T-10, respectively. Senior
Jacob Nickell (+6) rounded out the team scores by sharing 26th place, while individual
Collin Powers (E) earned a career-best 13th-place finish while carding a collegiate-low 68 in round two.
