Oldest Program Record Falls As Track & Field Begins Outdoor Season

ST. LOUIS - The UIndy men's and women's track and field teams kicked off the outdoor season with two meets over the course of three days. A small group of distance runners traveled to St. Louis to compete in the WashU Distance Carnival on Thursday and Friday. The rest of the team headed down to Hanover, Ind. to compete in the Hanover Invitational.
 
WASHU DISTANCE CARNIVAL
The distance squad made an impact at the large meet featuring hundreds of athletes nationwide. Felix Rivet was the sole Greyhound to compete on Thursday but that did not deter him from making history. The Frenchman competed in the 3000m steeplechase placing third and passing the NCAA DII provo. Finishing the race in 8:55.84, Rivet set a new school record in the event. Joel Keller had the previous school record of 9:01.94, which he set in 2016.
 
 
The highlight of Friday's competition was winning Josue Le Cadre the 1500m; he broke the oldest school record in program history. The record was set back in 1983 by Dean Rich, who ran a 3:49.36. Le Cadre knocked 3.95 seconds with his time of 3:45.41. Rivet placed fifth in the event with a time of 3:47.49, this is the second-best time in program history. Both Frenchmen earned NCAA provos in the event as well.
 
 
Tom Saint-Juvin was the third Hound to reach an NCAA provo. Saint-Juvin's came in the 800m. The senior completed the two laps in 1:50.45, a new personal best.
 
Emma Gaston (10,000m, 40:57.12) and Lex Wilhelm (5000m, 18:53.14) were the sole competitors from the women's team to make the trip. Carlos Rodriguez (10,000m, 31:56.36) and Conyer Wilson (5000m, 16:10.73) rounded out the UIndy lineup in St. Louis.
 
HANOVER INVITATIONAL
The Greyhounds had a successful day at Hanover to start the outdoor season. The score meet, featured eight other schools from NCAA DIII and the NAIA. The women's squad came out on top with 140 points, and the men's team earned 98 points, 10 points shy of host Hanover. 

Reigning National Champion Zoe Pentecost started the season with a 59.28m mark in the hammer throw, winning the event. In the women's shot, Faith Hensel had the best finish, placing third with 13.06m. Amanda Noel took first in the javelin with 36.77m, a new personal best. On the men's side, Dylan Mayhew returns to the ring in the hammer throw with a personal best throw of 56.46m. Mayhew won the event with Cameron Smith following behind in second. Smith also set a new personal best at 53.36m. Mayhew went on to win the shot put as well with a mark of 15.70m.
 
On the track, Jorjia Ferguson won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.80. In the 400m hurdles, Jack Scoggins and Ellie Lengerich won their respective race. Scoggins completed his lap in 57.32, with Lengerich finishing in 1:05.06.
 
Madison Schofield won two events during the meet, the 200m and the 100m. The senior started in the 100m, where she was the sole runner to finish under 13 seconds after clocking 12.87. Schofield went on to run the 200m in 26.33 seconds.  Emily Sonderman and Jalen Larkey won their respective events in the 400m dash. Sonderman completed her race in 56.99, and Larkey finished his lap in 49.92. Curt Dahncke was the final Hound to win their race. Dahncke took on the 800m, where he finished in 1:59.22.
 
Mackenzie VanBibber and Lillian Callahan were the sole competitors to compete in the women's pole vault. Callahan cleared 3.35m in her first meet as a Greyhound. VanBibber, passed her teammate for first after clearing 3.65m. Keywuan Taylor won the pole vault on the men's side with a mark of 4.45m.  
 
UP NEXT
The Greyhounds will compete in two different meets next weekend. First up will be at Indiana Tech on Friday, Apr. 4, in For Wayne, IN. The Oliver Nikoloff will also begin on Friday and last through Saturday. The meet is hosted by the University of Cincinnati and will take place at Gettler Stadium on UC's campus.
