HICKORY, N.C. – UIndy men's soccer's
Alvaro Sanchez netted the game winner in Hickory FC's 1-0 win over the Lubbock Matadores on Saturday July 19, in the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) South Region Final.
The South Regional final between Hickory FC and Lubbock was a tensely contested stalemate through 62 minutes, before Sanchez's header, on a cross from Maxime Wester, found the back of the net to put Hickory FC ahead 1-0. His goal proved to be the decider, as the remaining 28 minutes, Hickory FC focused on retaining their 1-0 lead with a stellar defensive effort, to eventually push themselves to a NPSL South Region Final victory, and a date in the NPSL National Semifnals against Ristozi FC on Saturday July 26.
"It was a special moment for me, being able to connect with all the fans and help the team achieve our goal," Sanchez said. "We've worked hard to get to where we are."
Sanchez was a crucial piece of UIndy's offense in the 2024 campaign, as in his first season with the team he appeared in all 18 games for the Hounds, racking up four goals and one assist along the way. He also ranked third on the team in 2024 for total shots with 21, and points with nine. The 2024 All-GLVC Third Team honoree will look to be a key contributor once again for the Hounds in their 2025 season.
"Alvaro had a great spring and has just built on that this summer with Hickory FC," head coach
Gabe Hall said. "I have now doubt that this experience is going to benefit him and the UIndy team this fall."
