INDIANAPOLIS – The
20th-ranked UIndy football team continued a tradition nearly as old as the game itself this week by selected its team captains for the 2025 season.
Ryne Buttz,
Alonzo Derrick,
Jalyn Givan,
Brandon Smith,
Gavin Sukup and
Jalen Wilson were all voted by their peers to assume the team's official leadership roles this fall.
Sukup is the only repeat captain among the sextuplet. The Greyhound quarterback is the two-time reigning
GLVC Offensive Player of the Year after topping the league in passing yards (2,621), total offense per game (248.6) and passing efficiency (158.3) in 2024.
Buttz and Derrick—both two-time All-GLVC First Team honorees a season ago—will also represent the offense. Defensively, Givan (All-GLVC Second Team in '24) and Smith (All-GLVC Honorable Mention) are coming off award-winning campaigns, while Wilson is wrapping up a great fall camp after sitting out last season due to injury.
The Greyhounds will enter the season as the conference favorite after topping the recently-released
GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll. UIndy opens its season on Thursday, Aug. 28 at crosstown Marian University. Two G-MAC foes follow, including 2024 playoff-qualifier Ashland University for the home opener Sept. 13. Homecoming versus McKendree on Sept. 20 kicks off the conference schedule—the first of eight GLVC opponents. Along the way, the Hounds will be on the hunt for their fourth straight GLVC championships and a first-ever fourth-consecutive NCAA playoff berth.
