North Alabama 3, UIndy 2
FLORENCE, Ala. - The UIndy softball team split a doubleheader with host North Alabama on Saturday, taking the opener 1-0 before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
Megan Russell picked up the victory in the circle, while
Carmen Martinez provided the game-winning RBI.
GAME 1
Pitching and defense proved to be the difference in the opening game, as the Lions managed six hits to the Greyhounds' three, but could not push a run across, stranding 10 baserunners.
Indianapolis scored their lone run in the bottom half of the first after
Jennifer DeMotte was struck by a pitch and later came around to score on Martinez's RBI single.
North Alabama looked to answer in the top of the second, loading the bases with two out, but a strikeout by Russell, one of her eight for the game, would end any chances at a rally.
The Lions threatened again in the fourth and for a third time in the sixth, however Russell and the UIndy defense held strong and preserved a 1-0 victory for the Hounds.
Russell improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory in the circle, allowing six hits and three walks in her seven innings of work.
GAME 2
UNA struck first in the second game of the day, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run blast to left center by Andrea Palmer to take an early 2-0 advantage.
Indianapolis took advantage of an error in the top of second as
Hannah Atkinson scored after an errant throw to cut the Lion lead in half.
Ashley Boxley tied the game at 2-2 in the top half of the fifth on an RBI double to center that scored Russell, who doubled earlier in the inning. However, North Alabama would regain in the lead in the bottom of the frame on a single to left by Allie Peterson that allowed Cassandra McKinney to cross the plate for the game-winning run.
The next six Indianapolis hitters were retired in order and UNA claimed a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
DeMotte took the loss for the Greyhounds in game two, tossing six innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out three.
With the split, Indianapolis improves to 3-5 on the season and will retrun to action tomorrow (Feb. 28) when they close out the weekend with a pair of games against the nation's number one team in Alabama-Huntsville. The first game of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 PM.
