LOUISVILLE, KY.- Winners of 17 of its last 20, the University of Indianapolis baseball team took a pair of close games from fellow-GLVC-East-Division-member Bellarmine at Knights Field Friday. UIndy downed BU 8-5 in 10 innings in the first game before edging the home Knights 1-0 in game two. Junior
Kaleb Cunningham went 5-for-9 on the day and is now hitting a team-team .367 this season.
GAME 1
The Greyhounds (19-9, 10-2 GLVC) got five big runs in the 10th to help earn their first extra-inning win of the season.
Travis Capps and
Danny Collier stroked back-to-back doubles to start the frame, making it second and third with nobody out. RBI singles from Cunningham and
Scott Mourey sustained the UIndy rally, while
Colby Shaw, who later stole home on a double steal, also earned a ribbie with a bases-loaded HBP.
Despite the eventual three-run win, the Hounds had a hard time shaking the Knights. Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Bellarmine (14-19, 4-8) managed to push across the tying run with help from a Greyhound error to force extras.
Later with the Hounds up five in the bottom of the tenth, Chris Wiedmar, who scored the tying run an inning prior, jacked a two-run homer with just one out to pull the home team within three. Senior reliever
David Early retired two of the next three batters, however, to halt the Knights' rally and earn his first win of the year.
UIndy starter
Cory Rupert had his sights set on the fifth complete-game win of his career, but the all-region hurler had those hopes nixed when he was pulled with one down in the ninth. Rupert (4-2) got the no decision while fanning six batters and walking three. Only one of his three runs allowed was earned.
GAME 2
Though Rupert couldn't quite finish the nine-inning first game, game-two starter
Donovan Drake went the distance in the seven-inning capper. The Danville Area Community College transfer threw a four-hit shutout to notch his third complete game in a Greyhounds uniform, while striking out nine Knights and walking just one.
Offensively, the Greyhounds mustered a single tally in the top of the third. The manufactured run came after a Cunningham single, an
Adam Akin sacrifice bunt, and a
Chris Saroff RBI knock.
The slim lead held as Donovan (3-2) won the pitchers' duel against BU's Braxton Graven (2-3), who also threw all seven frames.
UIndy remains in town to finish the four-game series with Bellarmine Saturday. Doubleheader action from Knights Field starts at noon EDT.
Note: UIndy head coach Gary Vaught needs just three wins to reach 700 for his career. The long-time skipper entered the season as the 15th winningest coach in Division II.
