Hounds bounced from NCAA tournament with 1-0 loss

DETROIT, Mich.-  A solo homer in the second inning proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Quincy win over Indianapolis in the second day of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional tournament at Wayne State University.  The loss eliminates the Greyhounds from the tournament.

Greyhound starting pitcher Megan Russell, who threw all 14 innings in a tough 3-0 loss in the tournament's opener, came back strong again on day two.  An opposite-field homer by Carla Passini in the second inning was the only hit for the Hawks through 5.2 innings, but it was a big run as the offense continued to struggle to score.

Indianapolis had several opportunities to get on the board, but Great Lakes Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year Torie Bunzell managed to work her way out of several jams as the Hounds stranded nine runners in the loss.

Bunzell limited the Hounds to three hits, one each by Chrissy Stephens, Audrey Ernst and Kelsey Rummel.  Russell threw 6.0 innings, allowing two hits with one run and five strikeouts.

The Greyhounds finish the season with a 36-17 overall record.  Quincy will advance to face Saginaw Valley State in a loser's out game later on Saturday.  Wayne State was a winner in the day's first game and will play in the championship series on Sunday for an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Super Regionals.

Notes:  The Greyhounds are making their third straight trip to the NCAA tournament ... UIndy was the defending Midwest Region champion ... It was the final game in the careers of the Greyhounds' two seniors, Carmen Martinez and Megan Russell ... Russell leaves the school as the all-time leader in homers, pitching wins, strikeouts and runs batted in, among others.
