ABOUT DELTA STATE
Members of the perennially-tough Gulf South Conference, Delta State brings a 3-5 record into play this weekend. The Statesmen's last two games ended in losses to West Alabama and Valdosta State, both of whom are ranked in the latest
AFCA D-II poll.
Option-quarterback Trevor Wooden leads the team in rushing with 543 yards and nine TDs. He has also passed for 1,520 yards, 12 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Senior Lavon Downs leads the Statesman with 30 receptions, while also ranking eighth in the nation in kickoff return average (28.8 ypr).
DSU is led by first-year head coach Jamey Chadwell. Chadwell spent the previous three seasons at Division-II North Greenville University. Last season, he guided the Crusaders to an 11-3 record and an NCAA D-II quarterfinals appearance. Ironically, his NGU team was eliminated from the playoffs by Delta State, 28-23, on the Statesmen's home field.
HOUNDS vs. STATESMEN
As is the case with eight of UIndy's opponents this year, Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between the Hounds and Delta State.
LAST TIME OUT
UIndy remained unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a
48-3 win against visiting William Jewell last Saturday night. With a one-game lead in the GLVC standings and just one conference game left, the Greyhounds are assured at least a share of the first-ever GLVC football championship.
As is the case seemingly every week this season, a number of UIndy records fell in the blowout win;
Mar'quone Edmonds became the school's all-time leader in career receiving yards, while
Klay Fiechter broke single-season records for both rushing touchdowns and overall touchdowns.
STREAKIN'
The 7-2 Greyhounds head into this weekend riding a seven-game winning streak, their highest since running off eight straight spanning the 1998 and '99 seasons.
The program record for longest win streak is 12, set in 1953-54. Including a pair of ties, the Greyhounds went unbeaten in 13 straight games spanning the 1984 and '85 seasons.
UIndy also started the 2011 campaign 7-2 before dropping the season's final two games.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
The Hounds held steady at No. 4 in this week's
NCAA Division II Super Region #4 rankings. The region's two undefeated clubs switched places, as Ashland leapfrogged Colorado State-Pueblo to hijack the No. 1 spot. Third-ranked Chadron State, No. 4 UIndy and fifth-ranked West Texas A&M all remained static.
A two-loss Saginaw Valley State team moved up one slot to No. 6, while Missouri S&T, the GLVC's only other team in the top 10, is currently on the outside looking in as the seventh-ranked squad. See page 5 for this week's the Super Region #4 poll.
Just six teams from each region will advance to the 24-team NCAA D-II Championships. The annual tournament will begin on campus sites Nov. 17. The opening round will feature the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds hosting games versus the sixth- and fifth-seeded squads, respectively, while the top two teams will receive byes.
The Greyhounds are looking for their first postseason appearance since joining Division II back in 1979. They last made the NCAA playoffs as a D-III squad in 1975.
SOMETHING EXTRA
Sophomore kicker
Scott Miller, this week's GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week, is riding a streak of 50 straight successful PAT attempts. Miller, who has not missed a kick of any kind in eight weeks, has connected on all 48 extra-point tries this year, shattering his own program record for most PATs in a season (37 in 2011).
PASSING FANCY
Junior quarterback
Chris Mills also picked up a weekly honor from the conference, as he was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Week. Mills racked-up a season-high 289 passing yards in just three quarters of work versus Jewell. He completed 16-of-21 attempts (76 percent), with four going for at least 40 yards and four resulting in touchdowns. Mills, who ranks eighth in Division II in passing efficiency at 169.9, has thrown four TDs in each of the last four games.
ON POINT
The Greyhounds have already broken the school record for both points and touchdowns scored in a season. UIndy's 359 points and 48 TDs already eclipse the former marks of 353 and 47 -- both set in 2007 -- with two regular-season games still to play.
STAT HOUNDS
Among the statistics tracked by the NCAA, the Greyhounds rank in the top 10 in Division II in five categories and in the top 20 in eight. UIndy tops all D-II teams in sacks allowed per game (0.44), while ranking second in punt return average (21.9 ypr), third in pass defense (145.3 ypg), and seventh in both total defense (272.6 ypg) and passing efficiency (166.9). UIndy is also positioned highly in scoring defense (12th, 16.8 ppg), scoring offense (39.9 ppg) and total offense (467.8 ypg).
3/4 SPEED
In the first three quarters of its seven GLVC games thus far in 2012, UIndy has outscored its opponent 276-45. That means the Greyhounds' conference foes have trailed by an average of nearly five touchdowns (or 33 points) heading into the fourth quarter.
WHAT A RUSH
Fiechter hopes to add his name to the top of another UIndy all-time list this week, as the junior running back needs 94 rushing yards to become the school's new single-season rushing champ. He is chasing former UIndy-standout Craig Jenkins, who racked-up 1,324 yards on the ground in 2008.
