Week 11 Football Preview

With their perfect record on the line, the Hounds host playoff-hopeful Notre Dame College in the regular-season finale

11/9/2017 9:57:00 AM

Notre Dame Falcons (8-2) at 6 UIndy Greyhounds (10-0)
Saturday, Nov. 11, 1 p.m. ET, Key Stadium

ON TAP
The sixth-ranked Greyhounds look to secure their first undefeated regular season since 1953 when they host Notre Dame College Saturday afternoon.

SENIOR DAY
Prior to kickoff, UIndy will be honoring its 17 seniors – the most ever on a Bartolomeo-coached team. The list includes the likes of Jordan Bedan, Aaron Bruning, Dillon Dallas, Nate Deno, Chandler Fields, Mike Hamilton, Ruben Holcomb, Darion Howard, Alex Kimack, Martece McClinton, D'Lan Mose, Cecil Nicholson, Tuwan Payton, Brad Schickel, Andrew Walker, Aeneas White and Garrett Willis.

The group has helped the Greyhounds to a 35-9 record the past four years combined, including three GLVC titles and a playoff berth in 2015. Throw in Jordan Bedan's redshirt-freshman season of 2013* and tack on another conference crown and postseason appearance for the class.

*Bedan earned a medical redshirt in 2016 and came back for a sixth  year.

THIS ONE GOES TO 11?
With one more regular season game still remaining and a potential playoff berth looming, UIndy has already matched the program record for wins in a season. The Hounds' 2012, '13 and '15 squads each finished with 10 victories, but no UIndy team has yet won 11. Furthermore, the last UIndy team to complete an undefeated regular season was the 1953 club.

HOUNDS vs. FALCONS
Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between UIndy and Notre Dame College. In fact, the Greyhounds have played just one game against the whole of the Mountain East Conference combined: a GLVC-title-clinching 31-24 win at former-GLVC-member Urbana in the 2012 regular-season finale.

At 8-2, the Falcons come into the weekend receiving votes in this week's AFCA DII Coaches Poll. They also sit eighth in the Super Region One rankings, one spot away from earning the program's first-ever playoff berth.

Led by senior quarterback Malik Grove, the Notre Dame offense features a stout rushing attack that ranks 13th in DII at nearly 250 yards per game. Additionally, the Falcons have committed just seven turnovers all season, good for second in the nation.

BALL SECURITY
Both of Saturday's teams' offenses have been particularly effective at avoiding interceptions. UIndy and Notre Dame have each thrown just two picks on the year, sharing third place in the DII statistical rankings.

For UIndy, Purichia's two interceptions represent the lowest total ever for a Greyhound QB with at least 200 pass attempts.

PLAYOFF PICTURE
Just days before the 2017 NCAA DII playoff field is announced, UIndy remained at No. 2 in the latest Super Region Three rankings. The top seven teams from the country's four regions will earn a postseason berth. The No. 1 seed in each region will earn a bye, with seeds 2-4 hosting 5-7 in first-round action Nov. 18. The 2017 bracket will be announced Sunday at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.

UIndy is looking to earn its fourth-ever trip to the Division II playoffs. The Hounds qualified in 2012, '13 and '15, earning the program's only postseason victory in 2012.

LAST TIME OUT
UIndy overcame its largest halftime deficit last week on the way to a 43-34 win versus Missouri S&T to lock up the outright GLVC title. Trailing by 11 at the break, the Hounds out-scored the Miners 23-0 in the third quarter, with QB Jake Purichia firing three TD passes in the decisive period.

PRESSURE COOKER
Jacob Schmatz had a career day statistically versus S&T, racking up a personal-high four sacks – all in the second half. The Mishawaka, Ind., native matched the highest sack total by a Greyhound since at least 2002, the first year single-game sack info is available.

MAXIMUM PROTECTION
Fronted by a physical offensive line, UIndy leads Division II in fewest sacks allowed at just 0.5 per game. The Hounds have not surrendered a sack since week 7 versus Quincy, a span of 85 pass attempts.

WATCH THIS
Senior Brad Schickel is one of just 12 Division II place kickers and 41 collegians nationwide named to the October edition of the Fred Mitchell Award Watch List, presented annually to the nation's top kicker based on performance both on the football field and in the community. Schickel, who leads the GLVC in scoring (8.1 ppg), hit a pair of field goals last week, including a career-long-matching 45 yarder late in the first half.
