8 UIndy Greyhounds
at Lindenwood Lions
Saturday, Nov. 2, 2 p.m. ET, St. Charles, Mo.
ON TAP
Fresh off setting a new GLVC record with its 23rd consecutive conference win last week, No. 8 UIndy (7-0. 5-0 GLVC) travels to St. Charles, Mo., to take on the Lindenwood Lions (5-3, 4-0) Saturday afternoon. The matinee match-up features the lone unbeaten teams in GLVC play.
TITLE TALK
With just one league game left for the Greyhounds after Saturday, a win versus the Lions would give UIndy a share of the GLVC title, netting its seventh conference crown in eight seasons. Conversely, Lindenwood, who has two GLVC games left on the schedule after this weekend, would need a win against the Hounds plus one more to guarantee a share of the crown. Also in the title hunt is Truman, who is 4-1 in conference play with only one GLVC game left heading into the weekend.
ABOUT LINDENWOOD
Playing in their first season in the GLVC after moving over from the MIAA (pronounced M-I-double A), the Lions are riding a four-game winning streak heading into the week. Defensively, Lindenwood is led by junior linebacker Drew Seers. The two-time reigning GLVC Defensive Player of the Week ranks second in all of Division II with 13.3 tackles per game. On the other side of the ball, sophomore QB Cade Brister sits in the top 10 in the nation in passing TDs (2nd), completions per game (3rd) and passing yards (8th).
HOUNDS vs. LIONS
Saturday marks the first ever meeting between UIndy and Lindenwood. Until 2019, the two had been in different conferences, and prior to that, in two entirely different athletic associations The Lions were a successful NAIA program before starting their transition to NCAA Division II in 2011-12. They became a full-time member of the MIAA in '12-13 before shifting to the GLVC this year.
LAST TIME OUT
UIndy remained hot out of their bye week, scripting a
48-7 home win against a good Missouri S&T club. The Greyhounds rushed for more than 400 yards, including a combined 324 yards from
Al McKeller and
Toriano Clinton, while linebacker
Joe Lambright blocked a punt and had a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown. McKeller and Lambright were subsequently named GLVC Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week, respectively.
OFFENSIVE BEHAVIOR
With yet another high-scoring output last week, UIndy now leads Division II in scoring average at an even 50.0 points per game. The Hounds rank third among all NCAA football teams in the category, with DIII powerhouses Mount Union (51.7) and Linfield (50.3) the only teams surpassing their lofty average. UIndy is on pace to shatter the school record of 38.2 points per game, set just two seasons back in 2017.
PLAYOFF POSSIBILITIES
UIndy debuted at No. 3 in the season's initial
Super Region Three rankings, released Monday. The Greyhounds are one of four unbeaten teams in region, and the only one that doesn't have a current member of the top 10 on its remaining schedule.
The top seven teams from the country's four regions will qualify for the NCAA Division II Playoffs, which start Nov. 23. As in previous years, the No. 1 seed in each region will earn a bye, while seeds 2-4 will host first-round games. However, a new wrinkle was added this season, giving the NCAA DII Football Committee flexibility to shuffle seeds 5-7 to a closer destination or out of the region entirely for the purpose of limiting the number of charter flights.
EDWARDS & UPWARDS
Senior quarterback
TJ Edwards is racking up some impressive numbers, not only in 2019 but during the whole of his remarkable career. The Southwest Baptist transfer and 2016 GLVC Offensive Player of the Year leads all active Division II players in career completions (728), passing yards (9,771) and passing touchdowns (94) while ranking sixth in career completion percentage (.615). This season, he ranks third in DII in passing efficiency (176.7) and sixth in yards per pass attempt (9.8). He has recorded at least two passing TDs in all seven games this fall while adding a rushing TD in each of the last six.
RECORD WATCH
Speaking of impressive numbers, junior running back
Al McKeller has already etched his in the UIndy record books. The hometown product and reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Year is less than three full years into his collegiate career and is already among the school's all-time leaders in rushing yards and rushing TDs (see below). His first such score on Saturday will tie the latter record, while he has a chance to surpass the former mark by season's end. Additionally, he needs just 176 more yards to become the first-ever Greyhound with three 1,000-yard-rushing campaigns.
