ON TAP
Fresh off earning the Super Region Three championship and their first-ever trip to the Final Four, the Greyhounds (16-5-1) drew SR4-champ Cal State LA (18-0-3) in the first semifinal, the lone unbeaten team remaining in Division II.
MAKING HISTORY
Having qualified for the national tournament for the first time in 2013 and earning a bid in each odd-numbered season since, the Greyhounds earned the program's first NCAA win last month with a 3-2 victory against Fort Hays State the opening round of the Super Region Three bracket. UIndy remained hot from that point, rolling off three more tournament wins, including shutout wins versus top-seeded Lake Erie in the second round and Maryville in the region final.
IMMEDIATE IMPACT
Junior goalkeeper
Dimitrios Karousos has been one of the best keepers in the GLVC this season. Karousos' success should not come as a surprise to people in the region, as the Ashland transfer was named the 2018 GLIAC Goalkeeper of the Year before defecting from the Eagles. The Athens, Greece native has started 14 games for the Hounds this season, missing time due to injury. Luckly, the Hounds had a more-than-capable replacement on hand...
TAKING ONE FOR THE TEAM
Miles Palmer thought he was done playing collegiate soccer since Karousos came in as a transfer this year. But when Karousos went down in mid October, Palmer, who was a graduate assistant with the team at the time, took advantage of his final remaining year of eligibility to come back and help guide the team to the NCAA Tournament. Already with nearly 60 games and 5,000 minutes in goal for the Hounds, Palmer started the team's first three tournament games before going down with injury in the win over Ohio Valley, prompting a return by Karousos.
BAND OF BROTHERS
The UIndy roster sports not one but two sets of brothers. Last year,
Alejandro Steinwascher teamed up with his brother, Javier, on his way to earning 2018 GLVC Co-Freshman of the Year accolades. This year,
Patryk Olczyk joined his brother, Jakub, on the Greyhound squad as the two pairs of brothers representing four different classes.
ALWAYS RELOADING
The Hounds led the GLVC with eight All-GLVC selections a season ago, losing five of the honorees to graduation. The Greyhounds did not miss a beat this year, replacing the five winners with two new ones on their way to making their run to the Final Four.
SHARING IS CARING
Javier Steinwascher is regarded as one of the best attackers not only in the conference, but in the nation. The senior from Sterling Heights, Mich., has showed that he can not only finish (14 goals), but set up his teammates as well, leading the nation with a school-record 19 assists on the year. His 49 points heading into Thursday's game are also good for a single-season program record.
CLASS ACT
The senior class of
Andrew Dunkin, Jaiver Steinwascher,
Ben Rohder,
Aba Phutin,
Julian Zylfiu,
Mase Koki,
Miles Palmer and
Ian Vicars will leave UIndy as the program's all-time winningest class, compiling a 51-21-9 (.685) record the last four seasons.
TOP MAN
Coach John Higgins has been one of the best coaches in the GLVC since taking over the reins for his alma mater in 2010. Coach Higgins eclipsed the 100-career-win mark last season at Key Stadium in the team's 1-0 overtime win against Southern Indiana. After Sunday's win, Higgins currently sits at 119 wins as coach of the Greyhounds.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Javier and
Alejandro Steinwascher are not the only members of the Steinwascher family to head to Pittsburgh for the national semifinals. Cecilia Steinwascher, an All-America candidate and center back for the Grand Valley State women's team, is also heading to the Steel City this week. Coincidentally, Cecili's Laker's defeated the UIndy women's club in the Midwest Region final last weekend.
UNDERDOGS
The other three teams representing their super regions this weekend in Pittsburgh were all in the top half of their brackets heading into the tournament. Lynn was the No. 1 seed in Super Region Two, while their opponent, Charleston (W.V.), was No. 3 seed in SR1. Meanwhile, Cal State LA was the two seed in SR4. Th Hounds came out of Super Region Three as the No. 9 seed, easily the lowest seed to make the national semifinal this season.
LETHAL ATTACK
Led by the Steinwascher brothers, the Greyhounds have gotten contributions from a host players this season to help them break into DII's top 10 in scoring offense. Behind Javi's 49 points and Alex's 17, rookie
Bryan Moreira made a strong case for GLVC Freshman of the Year, compiling 14 points on the season. All-GLVC First Team selection
Ben Rohder amassed 12 points, while
Jakub Olczyk's has added 11 points, giving the Hounds five players with double-digit point totals in 2019.
For fans traveling to the game, Highmark Stadium has a clear bag policy so please plan accordingly.
