Eight Hounds Earn All-Region Accolades

GRAND LAKE, Colo. – Eight members of the UIndy women's lacrosse team were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Midwest region team on Thursday afternoon, headlined by the program's first All-America recipient, Riley McClure.

The eight Greyhounds is the most in the Midwest region, followed by Regis with seven.

Grace Gunneson, Destinie Katz, and Peyton Romig join McClure on the all-region first team, while Cassidy King, Julia O'Brien, Jess Soenen, and Lauren Wagner earned second-team recognition.

Gunneson and Katz ended their respective junior campaigns with a program-record 112 points, which ranks eighth in NCAA Division II. Katz, a lefty attacker, leads the country with 7.47 points per game, having racked up those 112 tallies in just 15 games. Gunneson led the Greyhounds with 69 goals, while Katz dished out 73 assists.

Romig hauled in a whopping 229 draw controls during her sophomore season, nearly topping the nation with 11.45 per contest. The Carthage, N.Y. product also scored 32 times, while scooping up 19 ground balls.

Defensively, McClure was once again one of the best in the country in 2019, picking up 49 ground balls and causing 48 turnovers, all while also securing 94 draw controls. The junior out of Ancaster, Ontario has arguably her best game of the season last Friday in the Midwest regional, when she secured 13 draws, caused three turnovers, and recorded two ground balls.

The freshmen trio of King-O'Brien-Soenen proved to be valuable to the Greyhounds. King, along with being named second-team all-region, earned Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Freshman and Goalkeeper of the Year honors. Soenen earned second-team all-league accolades, while O'Brien was named to the honorable-mention squad.

Wagner capped off her UIndy career as a first-time All-Midwest honoree, causing 11 turnovers and scooping up 13 ground balls. The defender out of Upper Arlington, Ohio was one of the original class at UIndy that began the program back in 2016.

The IWLCA will announce its All-America members after the National Championship this weekend.
