Women's Lacrosse Tabbed as #1 Team in Division II

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. - After being set as the No. 2 team for the last couple weeks, the UIndy women's lacrosse team (7-0, 1-0 GLVC) was finally set as the top team in Division II on Monday, announced on the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll. The Greyhounds No. 1 ranking marks not only the first top ranking in program history, but also is set as the highest ranking ever received by the team.

The Hounds made the jump to the top spot after the squad rushed into the GLVC season with an empathic 25-1 victory of the Lewis Flyers on Saturday at Key Stadium. Abigail Lagos led the team with eight points in the contest on five goals and three assists, the senior attack garnering seven of those points in the first half alone. Lauryn Hardoy would be the next-highest scorer with five points, the Granite Bay, CA., native this time racked up four assists to pair with a goal on only one shooting attempt. Peyton Romig would head the defensive stand against Lewis with leading the team in draw controls (seven), ground balls (three) and cause turnovers (two). Riley McClure would be a showman on the defensive side as well, the 2020 Second Team All-American collected six draw controls in the win over Lewis.

"It's a humbling experience for our program to receive the No. 1 ranking in Division II," states head coach James Delaney, "This has never been a program goal though, we still have a lot of work to put in this season to accomplish the things we have set as the standard of our program. It is a great honor and something our players have certainly earned."

The Greyhounds have paced the nation as one of the best defensive teams, heading DII in both scoring defense (3.71 goals allowed per game) and scoring margin (15.86+ goal differential). Combo that with the second-best offense in DII at 19.57 goals per contest, UIndy has been one of the best all-around teams in the season. Individually, Romig still holds the top spot in draw controls per game at 11 while goalkeeper Cassidy King allows the fewest goals against at 4.15 per contest. The Hounds round out the top 10 in other individual categories as well, such as King's fifth-place save percentage of 59.3 percent and Lagos' average of seven shots on goal per game at sixth overall.

As UIndy jumped to the No. 1 ranking with their nine first-place votes, Lindenwood still holds a perfect record on the season now at the No. 2 spot with their 12 first-place votes, the most in the nation. Although these two programs remain the only GLVC teams to appear in the top 25, programs such as No. 8 GVSU and No. 6 Queens have remained in the top-10 rankings for UIndy to continually recognize the tough schedule they've had up to this point.

The Hounds will continue the GLVC season this weekend with a pair of contests on the road, traveling to Missouri Western first for a matchup on Friday, April 9. That game in St. Joseph, Mo., will face off at 8 p.m. ET.
