Greyhound Trio Claims IWLCA Top Honors

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis women's lacrosse team capped off their postseason awards with their most prestigious ones yet, sweeping the IWLCA Position Player of the Year Awards.  Abigail Lagos was named Division II Attacker of the Year and Riley McClure earned Defender of the Year, while Peyton Romig brought home both Midfielder of the Year and Overall National Player of the Year honors.

"It is truly special that all three of our captains earned their respective players of the year," noted Head Coach James Delaney. "We had a special team this year, a special season, and a lot of that is attributed to our great leadership. When your best players work as hard as these three, your team is in great hands."

This marks the first time in program history that UIndy has brought home any national positional awards from the IWLCA.  It is also the first time since the marquee awards' creation that a school has claimed three of the four positional honors.

"I couldn't be more proud of these student-athletes, as well as our program to give our players a platform to showcase themselves as the best of the best," said Delaney. "These awards are truly team awards; without everyone pushing each other every day at practice, and assisting these players to showcase their abilities, we wouldn't have earned three out of the four National Players of the Year as well as the overall Player of the Year."

Peyton Romig commanded the center circle all year long, totaling 200 draw controls to lead all of Division II.  This season the midfielder also dished out 25 assists to sit 29th in the nation.  The DII record holder in single-season draw controls, she finished her career atop the UIndy record books with 676 career draw controls while tied for 6th with 114 career points.  Romig adds to her GLVC First Team, GLVC Midfielder of the Year, US Lacrosse Magazine All-America First Team, IWLCA All-Region First Team and IWLCA All-America First Team selections.

"I can't say enough about the impact Peyton had on our season and our program over the years. Her ability to control the game all over the field and most importantly at the draw control circle, is massive in our program's efforts to win," commented Delaney.  "I couldn't be happier for her that other coaches around the country recognized what I have known for years now, that Peyton Romig is the best midfielder in the country."

Riley McClure anchored the nation's top defense in 2021, holding opponents to DII-leading 5.3 goals per game.  The senior caused 18 turnovers while grabbing 24 ground balls and 62 draw controls.  McClure finished her Hounds career with the most ground balls in program history at 167 and second most draw controls at 331.  She adds to her previous awards of GLVC First Team, GLVC Defender of the Year, US Lacrosse Magazine All-America First-Team, IWLCA All-Region First and IWLCA All-Region First Team.

"For five years now, Riley McClure has set the standard of what a UIndy defender is, and the work ethic it takes to be the best," Delaney said.  "When Riley first stepped on campus, we were a second-year program that nobody had ever heard of. As she ends her UIndy career, our program is looked at as one of the best in the entire country, and she can now say she is looked at as the best defender in the country. Our program is forever indebted to Riley's efforts, and this is a tremendous way for her to cap off her illustrious career."

Abigail Lagos finished second in the nation in goals this season, finding the back of the net 62 times.  She also finished 10th in total points, racking up 79 points on the year.  In the UIndy record books, Lagos currently sits second in career goals at 135 and sixth in points at 166.  The Windham, N.H., native adds to an impressive awards haul this season, garnering US Lacrosse Magazine All-America First Team, IWLCA All-Region First Team, IWLCA All-America First Team, GLVC First Team and GLVC Attacker of the Year already.

"Resilient would be the best way to describe Abigail Lagos.  She tore her ACL prior to the 2019 season, and now she is being recognized as the best attacker in the country," noted Delaney. "She sets the tone for our program daily with the work ethic we expect of our athletes outside of scheduled practice times. She is always putting in extra work, and her efforts have paid off again and again with a number of awards. I am so proud of what Abigail has accomplished to date in her career, and I cannot wait to see how she caps things off during her final two years of eligibility."
