On tap: Coming off of back-to-back losses, UIndy looks to return to the win column this weekend when it travels to the University of Findlay to battle the Oilers on their home turf. Both teams bring 1-2 conference records into Saturday's match-up.
Series history: After a two-year absence from the Greyhounds' schedule, UIndy hopes to up its 9-5 record in the all-time series versus Findlay. The two last hooked-up in week five of the '07 campaign -- a 34-3 road victory for Indianapolis. Then a freshman running back,
Craig Ray rushed for 97 yards and a TD in the win. The Hounds have won five straight in the series, which dates back to 1955, with the Oilers' last win coming back in 2002.
About Findlay: The Oilers have won one of its four games this year, a 10-7 win at Tiffin Sep. 18. Craig Hoying set a school record in the victory by amassing four sacks, a feat that later earned him GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Hoying's 4.5 sacks on the year ranks second in the conference, while his 7.5 tackles for a loss leads all GLIAC players.
Like the Hounds did last week versus Michigan Tech, Findlay will start a freshman at quarterback Saturday in Zach Tate. Tate has started all four games under center for the Oilers, as the Columbia, Tenn., native has completed 53-of-91 passes (58.2 percent) while throwing two touchdown passes against six interceptions.
UF ranks at the bottom of the league in scoring offense (7.5 ppg) and 13th out of 14 in total offense (257.2 ypg). However, it has had success stopping the run thus far, ranking third in the GLIAC by allowing 89.0 yards per contest on the ground.
About UF Head Coach Jon Wauford: Jon Wauford is currently in his fourth season as the head coach of the Oilers and has compiled a 15-22 overall record, including a 12-21 record in the GLIAC. Last year, Wauford and his Oilers finished with an overall record of 7-4, one year after suffering through a 2-9 campaign. A native of Findlay, Wauford, who did his undergraduate studies at Miami University and graduate studies at UF, became the 27th head coach in the history of Findlay football with his appointment in 2007.
About UIndy Head #Coach Bob Bartolomeo# (16-9-1 overall, 2-2 at UIndy): Coach “Bart” takes over the reigns of the UIndy football program after six seasons as the Greyhound defensive coordinator. Bartolomeo has over three-and-a-half decades of coaching experience at NCAA Division I-A, I-AA and II, but will be in his third season as a head man. He led the Butler Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II playoffs in 1991, winning the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC-- now the GLIAC) and posted a 14-7-1 record over two seasons. He then logged 11 seasons at Ball State and a brief stop at Central Michigan in 2003 before taking over the Greyhound defense in 2004.
2nd-Degree Byrnes: Senior cornerback
Alex Byrnes upped his career interception total to five last week by picking off a pair of Michigan Tech passes. Both picks came in the first half, with his first preceding a 42-yard return that set up a Greyhound field goal. Fellow defensive back
Nate Jackson made it three interceptions in the game and six on the season for the Greyhound defense with his first-quarter pick.
General Mills: With junior starter
Rob Doyle out with an injury last week, freshman
Chris Mills got the starting nod at QB versus Michigan Tech. Mills completed 11-of-27 passes for 152 yards in his collegiate debut.
On the Mar'Q: The aforementioned Mar'Quone Edmonds hauled in a 56-yard bomb from rookie QB
Chris Mills in the third quarter of last Saturday's game versus Michigan Tech. The play set a new career long for Edmonds and was also the Greyhounds' only touchdown of the day.
Running Woes: The UIndy offense is averaging just 78.8 rushing yards per game this season, besting only this week's opponent Findlay (38.0 rushing ypg) among GLIAC schools. The Greyhounds' average drops to 61.5 ypg in its two losses.
Ball Security: The Greyhounds lead all 14 GLIAC teams with a +9 turnover margin through four games, good for sixth in all of Division II. They top the league in both turnovers gained (12) and turnovers lost (3). Meanwhile, Findlay is second to the bottom in turnover margin (-7) and dead last in turnovers lost (13).
Tackling the Issues: Senior
Craig Ray heads into play this week with 43 tackles, good for first in the league. The All-GLIAC strong safety is averaging 10.8 tackles per game while also leading the conference in solo tackles (31). Sophomore
Max Davis also averages double-digit tackles (10.0 tpg) and is tied for third in the GLIAC with 40 total take downs.
A Leg Up: Tyran Fakes is 2nd in the GLIAC and 13th in the nation in punting average. The fifth-year senior has seven punts of at least 50 yards heading into the Findlay game, including a school-record 79-yard boot at Kentucky Wesleyan Sep. 2.
New League Announced for 2012: The University of Indianapolis will be one of the charter members of the newly-formed Great Lakes Valley Conference announced in January by league and school officials. The addition of football to the league's sponsored sports beginning in 2012 will allow UIndy to compete as a full member, joining 17 other Greyhound varsity teams that battle for GLVC championships. UIndy, which currently competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) as an associate member, will play its 2010 and 2011 schedules in that league. Indianapolis has been a member of the GLIAC since it merged with the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference back in 1999.
