After the Greyhounds win streak ended at four last weekend, UIndy will look towards getting back on a new win streak with their home contest against McKendree on Thursday.
ROLLING WITH THE CHANGES
The Hounds' plans this week were trimmed to a single game after COVID issues popped up for Southern Indiana, UIndy's scheduled Saturday opponent. The game at USI has now been penciled in for Tuesday, Jan. 26.
ABOUT MCKENDREE
Since starting 3-3 in the first six games of the season, the Bearcats have since gone 0-3 to drop under the .500 mark in the young season. During those last three games, McKendree has faced off against three of the current top-five teams in the conference (Drury, UMSL and Lewis).
The Bearcats' offense is based around redshirt-junior Sydney Diekhoff, currently leading the team in most statistical categories. Ranked in the top 30 in Division II in field goal attempts (27th), free throw attempts (10th) and 3-point field goals attempts (12th), her 12.8 ppg through nine games leads the team. Callie Pohlman's impact on the floor doesn't go unnoticed, the senior currently third in the nation in minutes played and fifth in total assists.
HOUNDS VS. BEARCATS
The history between the two programs has favored the Greyhounds, currently leading the all-time series 9-3. UIndy has taken each of the last three games, including a
68-62 win just last month.
Taylor Drury dropped 20 points off 5-of-8 shooting that afternoon, sinking eight free throws in the process to ensure the win.
Sadie Hill caught a hot streak in the second half, registering all of her 16 points in seven minutes, where she shot 88 percent from the field. The Greyhounds were able to find the good looks for a majority of the game, converting over 60 percent from the field in three of the four quarters, including a 7-of-10 performance in the first period.
The Bearcats distributed the rock around the court, with four players finishing in double figures compared to the Greyhounds' two. Christy Fortune hit all five of her shots in 29 minutes of action, finishing with 12 points. Madison Jones put in work on both sides of the floor, as the team's senior guard dropped 10 points while she also pulled six rebounds and dished five assists.
LAST TIME OUT
The Greyhounds had two road games on their schedule last week, where they took both a win and a loss. UIndy's victory came in Bolivar, Mo., at Southwest Baptist, where they took an
11-point victory over the Bearcats. Drury and
Mickey Sasson each recorded 20 points in 39 minutes of action, the first time a pair of Greyhounds scored 20 points in a single game since Feb. 6 at Rockhurst last season. UIndy committed a season-low nine turnovers in the contest, the first time in the season they committed less than 10 giveaways.
The Hounds then traveled to St. Louis to take on the UMSL, where they fell short in a
75-57 loss. Despite getting outscored in the second half, the host Tritons shot over 75 percent from the field in the first quarter to help hold a 14-point lead at halftime. Kiara Stewart took home a double-double in the Triton's victory, collecting 20 points and 10 rebounds in the process. Drury tried to carry the Greyhounds back into the game, compiling 23 points as the team's leading scorer.
EAST DIVISION
Both the Greyhounds and the Bearcats are placed in the GLVC East Division, currently fighting for spots in the upcoming GLVC tournament in March. Through the first part of the young season, the Greyhounds rank seventh overall in the point rating system with the Bearcats just outside playoff contention at 10th.
DROPPING DIMES
The Greyhounds have established themselves as a more patient offense, ensuring good looks as the number eighth-ranked team in DII total assists so far this season. The Greyhounds' main facilitator is Mickey Sasson, who ranks among the top in the nation as well, currently placed 28th in Division II and third in the conference at 5.1 assists per game.
HEAT CHECK
Over the last five games, Drury currently holds a scoring average of 20.5 points per game. Shooting 46 percent from the field during that span, including a 47-percent rate from deep and 81 percent from the free throw line. The senior is having her best single-season scoring and rebounding averages in her four years as a Greyhound. Drury also ranks second overall in the GLVC in 3-point baskets made and ninth in Division II overall.
