FEATURE: UIndy Softball's Cheyenne Eads Setting Records the Hard Way

Cheyenne Eads doesn't flinch. Not in the circle, and especially not at the plate.

The UIndy softball standout has built a reputation on toughness and a simple, unwavering mindset: "My philosophy at the plate is just to find a way on base and find a way to produce for my team," she said. "Keeping it simple and passing the bat is where we as a team are successful, and if I find a way on base, it puts more pressure on the defense and increases the chances of us scoring runs."

That mentality has turned Eads into one of the most reliable tablesetters in the lineup—no matter how she gets there.

FEARLESS AT THE PLATE
Eads and her on-base numbers tell a story of grit. Leading all NCAA hitters—regardless of division—in times hit by a pitch, Eads' HBP total of 35 has blown past the UIndy single-season record and is one shy of tying the Division II season record in the painful metric. She's learned to embrace the physical toll that comes with her approach. "Growing up I was always taught to be tough and do everything I can for my team," she said. "Getting hit by a pitch might hurt for a second, but if it helps put my team in a position to win, then I think it is well worth it."

And as a pitcher herself, Eads knows exactly what message it sends to the opposition. "With me being a pitcher, I think it's a little intimidating for the other team to see me get hit and still be unfazed."

That edge—mental as much as physical—has become part of her identity.

THE TWO-WAY GRIND
Eads has always wanted the game in her hands. "Growing up, I always loved having a big impact on the game; that's kind of why I became a pitcher," she confided.

The challenge came when she insisted on doing both—pitching and hitting—at the college level. "When choosing a school, one of my biggest goals was to be allowed the opportunity to play both sides of the ball even though I knew it was going to take more commitment, focus, and preparation."

That opportunity has defined her experience at UIndy. "I am grateful that Coach Frost and Coach Ferrell have allowed me the opportunity to compete and to contribute both offensively and defensively." Balancing bullpens and batting practice, scouting reports and swing work, Eads has leaned into the extra hours—and the extra responsibility.

ALL FOR THE TEAM
What drives her isn't individual stats or highlights. It's the quiet satisfaction of doing the hard things that help her team win. Whether she's taking a bruise to reach first or shutting down an inning from the circle, Eads measures success by how she can move the lineup forward. Her game is built on toughness, yes—but also on trust; trust in her process, her coaches, and the teammates who pick up the bat after her.

Because for Cheyenne Eads, being a dual-threat isn't just about talent. It's about the willingness to do whatever it takes to help the team win.

TROPHY SZN
Eads and her UIndy teammates are on the eve of making their 18th consecutive appearance in the NCAA DII regional.
