NORTHBOROUGH, Ma. - After the UIndy women's lacrosse team (2-0, 0-0 GLVC) took down No. 4 Queens (N.C.) this past weekend, the Greyhounds garnered Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association DII Player of the Week honors for the second week in a row. After
Peyton Romig won the defensive honor
a week ago, the IWLCA announced Tuesday that
Abigail Lagos (offensive) and
Cassidy King (defensive) would be DII's recipients this week.
"I couldn't be more excited about our players getting recognized after an incredibly successful weekend." states head coach
James Delaney, "Both players stood out for us on either side of the ball and really showcased their ability to be some of the best players in the country."
Lagos wins her first national honor off a career-tying performance against then-No. 4 Queens, where she netted seven goals and a ground ball to contribute to the
15-5 win. The Windham, N.H., native now ranks second on the team in points (11) on the early season.
"The game this weekend showed that we are a complete team and every person played a role throughout the entire 60 minutes." detailed Lagos. "
Grace Gunneson,
Sarah Klein and
Lauryn Hardoy all deserve as much credit because we all had each other's backs and worked as a complete unit on the offensive end."
Cassidy King totaled her second-highest career single-game total in saves on Saturday, collecting 12 shots from the Royals from their 17 shots on goal. The goalie's 25th win as a Hound came along with collecting a pair of ground balls as well for the squad. The Royals had averaged 19 goals per game before facing off against King and the Greyhound defense, with King only allowing five goals against the Queens offense on Saturday.
"This weekend's win was an all-around team effort; our defense and offense both played as one cohesive unit." explained King, " I wouldn't have had the game that I did if it wasn't for my defense. They helped slow down the shots and stood strong against a nationally-ranked team. We came in determined to get a statement win, and I'm really excited to see what we can accomplish the rest of the season."
UIndy will next take the field this weekend against Findlay, looking to extend their win streak to three games in a row. The Greyhounds will play at Key Stadium on March 6, kicking off the first draw at 12 p.m. ET.
"This win was just the beginning of what is to come for our team this season, and the future of our program." stated Lagos.
