Around the Pound

Good afternoon UIndy fans, there's a lot to be happy about in the Greyhound Nation and Around the Pound is your one stop shop for the good news. Be sure to check every Monday to see what has and will happen with your Greyhounds!

FOOTBALL
Homecoming football was a success through and through with an astounding 44-17 win for the No. 14 Greyhounds. UIndy touted 467 total yards of offense as they marched to the Hounds 11th consecutive Homecoming victory. And just like last week at Ohio Dominican, history was made, as Toriano Clinton became the first ever Greyhound to rush for 4,000 yards in a career, but that was not all as his two-touchdown day made him the career leader in rushing touchdowns and overall touchdowns.
  TENNIS
UIndy Tennis continued its tear on the Midwest Region with the women's ITA Midwest Regional concluding this past Monday. Similar to the men's side, the women saw Anna Novikova and Sofia Sharonova capture the doubles crown in dominating fashion. Lea Cakarevic also had a quality tournament finishing as the runner-up in singles in only her second collegiate season.
  COACH'S CORNER
With a pair of doubles Midwest champions, this week Malik Tabet, Head Coach of UIndy Tennis, sat down to discuss his team's success.

Doubles has long time been a strong suit for UIndy Tennis and for the past four years the Midwest region crown has been in the hands of the Hounds. Tabet said that he is very happy to see this tradition continue.

"It's always good to have UIndy represent our Midwest region at the nationals. I was happy in the fact that we haven't really trained that much in doubles," Tabet said. "Initially, we only had about two weeks of training before the regional tournaments. So to see a natural mesh between our players was a pleasant surprise. In the past, on the woman's side, you always saw Novi with Nikol [Alekseeva] for at least three straight years, winning the regional tournament. It's nice to see Novi with Sofia, making it all the way to the finals and really dominating in the finals against Grand Valley."

Novikova has been the constant on the women's side for years having won last year with Isabella Dunlap and previous years with long-time partner, Nikol Alekseeva. Now playing with Sofia Sharonova this season, Tabet said that the adjustment she makes to her partners is what makes Novikova so talented in doubles.

"She's a straight shooter; she serves hard, she returns hard, she's good at the net. She always adjusts to her partners, and that's what makes her a strong player in doubles," Tabet said. "The nice thing about especially this duo is that Sofia is a finesse player. She finishes she cleans up; she serves well. She returns well, she's very good. She's got really good hands at the net. And so, when Novi is hitting hard, and those, those opponents we lose control of that ball, that's what Sofia comes in and cleans the ball. And that's what made them very, very strong just last weekend."

On the singles side for the women, Lea Carakevic saw a deep run in the tournament making it to the finals. Tabet said that with continued growth, she can become a cornerstone of the program.

"I always enjoy watching Lea play just because she's always trying to implement something new into her game," Tabet said. "In this tournament particularly. She was a lot more physical. She just played extremely simple tennis. She didn't try to overkill. She made her opponents had one more shot. Unfortunately, she ran out of steam in the third set [of the finals match] where she needed all that energy and, but Lea has a tremendous potential."

Before the women's win, Tom Zeuch and Edgar Destouet won on the men's side of the doubles tournament. Zeuch and Destouet as a new pair was putting together the best team possible for a chance to win according to Tabet. He said that Destouet has continued to learn and that his growth has been fun to watch.

"What I what I really enjoyed is how much Edgar has learned over semester span. He's shown great maturity in the way he played, he finished the season," Tabet said. "He's one of those kids that soaks up every information that I give him and it's nice to see that he not only understands but applies it. And so having both of them play together, I found that they really complement each other really well. And, and they make it very simple. And that's, that's what's fun to watch. When it's simple tennis."

VOLLEYBALL
For Volleyball is was a double win weekend and it started with a bang against undefeated No. 25 Quincy. The Hounds dominated against an quality Quincy team capturing a sweep and handing the Hawks their first loss of the season. They kept that rolling against Truman on Sunday. After losing the first two sets, the Hounds bounced back and went onto win the next two and the eventual tiebreaker set.
  MEN'S SOCCER
It was scoring galore for UIndy men's soccer as racked up seven goals combined in their wins against Quincy and Truman. The 4-0 win against the Quincy Hawks marked the second largest margin of the victory for the Greyhounds this season, and the second clean sheet for Joey Schrand. Seth Ward was the star of the match against Truman, having two goals scored in the contest. WOMEN'S SOCCER
UIndy women's soccer saw a win and a tie over the past weekend. Hosting Quincy on Friday, the Greyhounds forced a 2-2 draw with goals from Sarah Wegener and Kiki Sauceda. On Sunday, the Hounds captured their first home conference win of the season, with a 1-0 victory against the Truman Bulldogs. SWIM AND DIVE
The men's and women's swimming and diving team opened their season with a match-up against DI Cincinnati and the men walked away with their first victory, winning 161.5-138.5, while the women fell 158-136. Graduate student and 13-time All-American Kaitlyn McCoy had a successful meet, leading all Hounds with three individuals wins.
