Around the Pound

Good afternoon UIndy fans, there's a lot to be happy about in the Greyhound Nation and Around the Pound is your one stop shop for the good news. Visit us every Monday to hear about how the Hounds did!

CROSS COUNTRY
The GLVC-conference race was the highlight of the week, with five Greyhounds leaving the annual race with All-conference honors. Melissa Spencer was the top overall finisher for the Greyhounds, landing in second place out of a field of 104. She was followed by Hannah Wells, Mariah Davis and Brianna Lawson who all helped push the Greyhounds to a third-place finish at the meet. On the men's side, AJ Goecker made it back-to-back season atop the men's finishers, crossing in 25:50.6 for 18th. WRESTLING
The first competition of the season is in the book for the No.3-ranked UIndy Wrestling, with them having taken on the Kaufman Open, hosted by Maryville University, this past Saturday. Derek Blubaugh, the No. 2-ranked wrestler in 197, was the highlight of the contest, winning his weight class at the Kaufman Open for the third time in his career. Alongside Blubaugh, Aidan Sprague would win the amateur 125, besting teammate Nathan Smith. COACH'S CORNER
This week we sat down with Jason Warthan, the Head Coach of the No. 3-ranked UIndy Wrestling team. He said early on that this was a successful weekend. Warthan said that while there were matches that obviously the team would hope to win, they overall competed very well.

"The guys are trying and evolving their wrestling, so, from that standpoint, you want to have coachable guys, you want to have guys that continue to improve, and I think we saw that," Warthan said. "For the first time out, it looked like conditioning wasn't really an issue as it as a team so that was good. We had 75% of our guys compete this weekend, and a lot of the new guys got their first college experience."

Derek Blubaugh established himself as one of the best at 197 last season, and further put him name on the map taking the title again at 197 this year for the Kaufman open. Warthan said that while last year was his breakout, the guys in the room knew he was primed to be one of the best in the country. He said that this tournament was a great opportunity to see the hard work he has put in over the summer come to fruition.

"This summer, he's put in a lot of work, he's evolving as a wrestler, we saw some of the new and improved stuff that he's working on," Warthan said. "I'm sure that people know who he is now and are going to approach matches with him with a certain strategy, and so he's going to have to grow and improve and learn how to deal with that a little bit. It was nice, I think his last couple matches he didn't get scored on and his first couple matches were pins or tech falls, and he was super aggressive."

On the amateur side of the bracket the Greyhounds shined, and for many of the wrestlers it was their first taste of collegiate competition. They came out and wrestled hard and showed promise, despite looking unpolished as a freshman can. He said that it's a good sign not only for the present, but for the future of the program.

"A lot of our returning starters sat this weekend out for multiple reasons, we wrestle on Thursday and so it's nice to know that you can rely on that that that next group or those younger guys to step in and compete at a high level and that's certainly what they did," Warthan said. "You start looking ahead for next year, two years, three years down the road and start predicting what teams are going to look like and it's nice to know that you have some guys waiting for their turn and know that they can step up if their numbers called."

FOOTBALL
Football continued their dominance over GLVC opponents this weekend, shutting down William Jewell by a score of 48-14. JaQuan Buchanan once again stepped up, rushing for three touchdowns, on 138 yards. Lenny Bennett made the rushing effort even more dangerous for the Cardinals to handle, eclipsing the 100 rushing yards mark for the third time in his career, adding a touchdown in the process. SWIMMING & DIVING
It was a very busy weekend for UIndy Swim & Dive, with them battling with GLVC-foe McKendree on Friday and then the Greyhounds battled both Wabash and Butler on Saturday.

The men's team, shorthanded due to the FINA Swimming World Cup, ended up falling to No. 3-ranked McKendree in a tight battle. However, not all was lost as All-American Julio Osuna etched his name in the UIndy record book. The Tijuana, Mexico native won the 3-meter event with an impressive 407.33, setting a new six-dive mark. The women's squad dominated the Bearcats, taking home a 194-104 victory.

On Saturday, the women's team faced Division I Butler, crushing them 143-84, while the men took an easy victory against Wabash, 153-70. GOLF
Men's Golf ended their fall schedule with the McDonough Cup in sunny Orlando, Fla., where Cam Carroll helped lead the Greyhounds to an eighth-place finish. Carroll shot an impressive 66 on his second round of action, a score that earned him GLVC Player of the Week. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
University of Indianapolis women's basketball battled two division I opponents in their exhibition affairs this season, firstly taking on Illinois State on Tuesday and then traveling south to tussle with Northern Kentucky. Idalis Ortiz was the was the shining light of the two games, scoring in doubles digits in both and recording a double-double against NKU. MEN'S SOCCER
Men's Soccer saw their GLVC tournament end by the hands of the Lewis Flyers on Friday. The Hounds jumped out early to a 1-0 lead before the Flyers came back and took the lead in the second period. UP NEXT
