TRACK & FIELD
It was opening weekend for the Greyhounds as they hosted their UIndy Season Opener meet, at home in the ARC. For the throwers it was a great opener with
Zoe Pentecost opening right back up where she did last season, winning the weight throw and setting a new PR in the progress of 19.65 meters. That mark sets her up well currently sitting first in the country, well beyond the provo mark of 17 meters.
Pentecost was not the only thrower to have success,
Keeton Adams hit a provo mark in shot put later that evening, sitting him at No. 2 in the country early in the season.
Emily Sonderman in the 400 and
Sabrina Robison in the pole vault were the final Greyhounds to pick up event wins on the opening weekend.
COACH'S CORNER
This week for the coach's corner we sat down with Scott Fangman, Director of Track & Field/Cross Country to discuss the opening weekend for the team and his outlook on the season.
"It went well, no real surprises, which is what your kind of looking for in all honesty, especially out of the underclassmen, our upperclassmen performed pretty much as well as we thought they would, and so they did a good job, especially Zoe and Keeton over in the throws," Fangman said. "The Newbies, whether they be transfers and or freshmen, performed, what we would call up to par, we didn't see anything bad, and it was all good. We did not get great and sometimes you get that and sometimes you don't. We got a lot of room for improvement."
Both Pentecost and Adams started out the year well, with Pentecost sitting first in the nation for weight throw and Adams at No. 2 for shot put.
"Zoe is a very competitive student and a very competitive athlete, and so I'm not worried about her competing, I think and that's those are the things I need to worry about is the coach or at least the head coach and Keeton is the same way this is not their first rodeo, these guys have been through this before and they will do well," Fangman said.
Sabrina Robison's victory in the pole vault continues the tradition of strong pole vaulting crews on the women's side. Fangman said that they did their best to make it a very competitive meet on the pole vault side.
"Our women's pole vault is still going to be strong for us, it was a very strong field for a first meet. We have some very elite pole vault groups here in the Midwest, and we were fortunate to attract several of the large clubs and colleges, Washington in particular," Fangman said. "We feel good about them [the pole vautlers], and looking across the board, I think we're looking strong."
WRESTLING
The No. 4-ranked Greyhounds took on the annual Little State tournament, this year hosted by Manchester University. The Greyhounds cleaned up, taking championships at 141, 157, 165 and 197, while taking silver at 125, 149 and 184. Of the Greyhounds taking championships was
Owen Zablocki, who in his final bout of competition as a Hound, left it all on the mat.
Logan Bailey and
Derek Blubaugh at 157 and 197 continued to dominate in their weight classes, setting them up well for the Midwest Classic.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
It was an action-packed week for the Greyhounds with them playing three games between Monday to Saturday. Monday night it was the culmination of a Missouri road trip, ending in Kirksville, Mo., against the Truman State Bulldogs, in which the Hounds fell 86-75 due to some late game heroics by the Bulldogs.
That loss didn't keep the Hounds down as they came back on Thursday night against the William Jewell Cardinals and cleaned house, taking the dub 75-65 off the back of a 19 point and nine rebound performances by
Sadie Hill.
Idalis Ortiz, Hill, and DI-transfer
Jodi Mullens were the three headed monster for the Greyhounds on Saturday against the Rockhurst Hawks. Ortiz dropped 18 points while Hill and Mullens both finished with 17. The Greyhounds shot the Hawks out of Nicoson on a scorching hot 56% from three-point range.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The UIndy men's basketball team opened up the week with a big win over Truman State, with
Kendrick Tchoua leading the Greyhounds with 17 points. The team followed that up at home with another 20-point victory, this time off the back of
Jesse Bingham who dropped 18 on route the win. The Rockhurst Hawks came into Nicoson on Saturday and upset the Greyhounds, 71-61.
