Good afternoon UIndy fans, we hope you have a happy thanksgiving, there's a lot to be happy about in the Greyhound Nation and Around the Pound is your one stop shop for the good news. Visit us every Monday to hear about how the Hounds did!
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The UIndy men's basketball team picked up a massive region win over the weekend. Defeating GLIAC powerhouse Grand Valley State 72-66 to stay a perfect 3-0 on the season. Four players scoring in double digits were the thorn in the Lakers side, with Kendrick Tchoua, Jesse Binham leading the scoring from the starters. Former Lewis-standout Bruno Williams had his breakout game as a Greyhound dropping 11 off the bench alongside David Ejah who also scored 11. The Hounds also ended their exhibition slate for the season, taking a trip to Western Kentucky where the Hounds fell 68-50.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Despite starting the season out with two losses in the GLVC/G-MAC Challenge, the Greyhounds showed a lot of energy and promise, and that all came to fruition this past week, picking up a pair of region wins over Hillsdale and Northwood. Sadie Hill has been the story of the past two games, having a masterful game against Hillsdale in Nicoson Hall, scoring 23 on 8-12 shooting and a perfect 7-7 from the charity stripe. She followed that up with yet another high scoring effort, netting 17 points against Northwood. Alongside Hill, Lauren With has been a menace to opponents these last two contests, scoring 12 and 15, while leading the Hounds in rebounding against Hillsdale.
COACH'S CORNER
For this week's coach's corner, we sat down with Head Coach Marc Mitchell of UIndy women's basketball. After starting the season off 0-2, the Greyhounds bounced back in a big way, picking up the first win of the Mitchell era against Hillsdale and then another on the road against Northwood. Mitchell said that the women have continued to learn from the mistakes of the early season and continued to develop chemistry wise.
One of the major points of improvement was the turnover battle. In their first two home games of the year, the Greyhounds turned the ball over 44 time, but limited that to just 25 times in the two most recent wins. According to Mitchell, it has been about buy in for the Greyhounds.
"The young ladies are really just buying into what we're asking them to do, and they're taking care of the ball, making better decisions out there and playing with a little bit more poise than they had in the first couple of games," Mitchell said.
In the past two games Sadie Hill has been a menace to Greyhound opponents, averaging 20 points the last two games. Mitchell said that he had a conversation with her after the Ashland game about expectations and since then she has been on fire. Hill was also named as one of the two captains last week, alongside fellow senior Mya Scheidt. Mitchell said that Hill and Scheidt lead in different ways, but both are necessary.
"Mya is more cerebral, in talking to people and Sadie is much more loud, passionate, and screaming at people but it comes from a great place, Mitchell said. "We need both of those styles. I think I think both are very valuable in a team sport. I couldn't think of any two other people that would rather have in their positions."
WRESTLING
It was another tournament weekend for the No. 3-ranked UIndy wrestling team as they took on the Findlay Open. The Greyhounds claimed three weight class championships, with Logan Bailey claiming the 157 bracket, while Derek Blubaugh and Phoenix Rodgers shared the 197 championship. Â
FOOTBALL
The No. 13 Greyhounds traveled the eight and half hours to Pittsburg, Kan., to battle the No. 3-ranked Pitt State Gorillas in the first round of the NCAA Playoffs. The day did not go in the Greyhounds favor however, as the Gorillas dominated from kickoff, scoring 28 points in the first half. The Greyhounds attempted to get the ball rolling in the second half, but an interception at the Gorillas' three yard line halted the Greyhounds offensive push. The Hounds ended up falling 35-0, ending their season.Â
SWIM & DIVE
The best team in the country proved at House of Champions why they deserve that No. 1 ranking, winning both sides of the annual meet at the IU Natatorium. Records fell and fell and fell over the throughout the three days of competition. Jeron Thompson, Cedric Buessing, Johanna Buys and Diego Mas were the four Greyhounds to capture school-records during the days of competition. The Greyhound men scored a meet leading 1592 points on their way to the championship, while the newly No. 1-ranked women scored 1570.
CROSS COUNTRY
The Greyhounds at the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional were highlighted by Melissa Spencer who earned All-Region honors after a 19th place finish at this year's race. With that finish she became the first Greyhounds to earn All-Region honors since Lauren Bailey in 2019. Her high finish led the Greyhounds to a 14th place finish out of 31 schools. AJ Goecker was the top finisher for the men's team with his 105th place finish at 33:30.8, leading the Greyhounds to a 19th place out of 28 teams.
