Good afternoon UIndy fans, there's a lot to be happy about in the Greyhound Nation and Around the Pound is your one stop shop for the good news. Visit us every Monday to hear about how the Hounds did!
FOOTBALL
Facing an uphill battle at Key Stadium, the University of Indianapolis football team was up to the test, defeating GLVC foe Quincy by a score of 52-38. JaQuan Buchanan was surprise standout as he was the fulcrum of the Greyhound offense, recording 178 all purpose yards and four touchdowns, both career highs for the redshirt-sophomore out of Aurora, Ill. Defensively, Michael Brown couldn't have asked for a better day, grabbing two interceptions for a total of 54 yards alongside 14 total tackles.
COACH'S CORNER
This week we sat down with Head Coach of UIndy Football
Chris Keevers and discussed the game against Quincy.
Across the seven games the Greyhounds have play, the Greyhounds have been dominant in the fourth quarter of contests, outscoring their opponents 78-35 and orchestrating two game winning drives late in the fourth. Keevers said that this late game success is due to the resiliency of his team and the culture they have built.
"It's because the type of people we have we've got people that work hard, people that stick together, everybody says that, but our guys stay together, we're it's more of a family atmosphere," Keevers said. "They really believe in each other and believe in this football team, and when you do that, you don't give up, you don't quit, and you find ways to win. That's we've done that all year was we finished in the fourth quarter and that's something we've talked about since January."
JaQuan Buchanan, who is in his fourth year with the program, was a monster for the Greyhounds rushing effort. Keevers said that when he looked for someone to step up, JaQuan was ready.
"That last run that he made, I told myself 'I've been coaching for 29 years, it was one of the greatest runs I've seen since I've been here,'" Keevers said. "He's a high character kid, he's a great student, it's his senior year, he's accepted a job already, he knows this is it for him. He's making the most of the situation and it was his start, his chance to shine and he did just that."
Special teams shined for the Hounds, with Markez Gilliam returning a kick for 88 yards for a touchdown early in the contest. According to Keevers, he said special teams needed to be special.
"We talked about our going into the game three keys game one of those keys were special teams be special," Keevers. "It was time to return a kickoff return a punt for a touchdown, we did it against Tiffin a while back and we have not done it since, and that was something we needed, to be special and we were special."
SWIM AND DIVE
The No. 1 and No. 4 UIndy swim and dive teams had an eventful weekend, battling division I Purdue on Friday before returning to Indianapolis in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center to take on perennial DII foe, Grand Valley State. The Hounds competed well against the Boilermakers on the 21st but fell on both sides, the men losing 181-113 and the women 176-115. The Hounds avenged that lose and more on Saturday. The No. 1 ranked men's team showed why they are the best team in the nation, beating No. 6 GVS 178-115. The women had a closer meet, beating No. 18, 155-143.
