Hounds of the Decade

UIndyAthletics.com To Run Decade-Celebrating Feature on Social Media

With the close of another decade upon us, UIndyAthletics.com is running an exciting new feature on Twitter and Facebook. Throughout the remainder of the month, we'll celebrate one of the most successful decades in school history by highlighting one team from each of UIndy's athletic programs using #HoundsOfTheDecade.

Naturally, the pool of teams was limited to those competing from 2010-19. Only teams with their championship season falling within that time frame were considered, so fall teams from the 2009-10 academic year and winter and spring teams in the current academic year were not eligible.

Look for the first #HoundsOfTheDecade post on Thursday, Dec. 19. Fans are encouraged to share their memories of the featured teams, as well as offer their thoughts on other great Greyhound squads and student-athletes from the decade. Be sure the follow @UIndyAthletics to not miss a moment.

And now, in no particular order, here are some of the standout teams/moments of the past decade.

WOMEN'S GOLF, 2015 & 2018 (but pretty much the whole decade)
With our final #HoundsOfTheDecade salute, we went with the very first UIndy Athletics program to win an NCAA team title: women's golf. Oh, and they did it not once, but twice.

The 2015 Greyhounds were the first non-Florida team to capture the DII women's golf title, while the 2018 squad can be (without hyperbole) argued as the best DII women's golf team of all-time.

When not winning the national championship, the UIndy women's golf program notched four other top-five finishes at Nationals this decade, including a runner-up showing in 2016. They also racked up seven regional titles to go with nine GLVC championships and an astonishing 72 tournament wins between the spring of 2010 and this past fall.

Individually, the Greyhounds combined for eight GLVC Player of the Year awards, 40 all-conference selections, 28 all-region accolades, 15 All-America nods, one individual national champ (Katharina Keilich, 2018) and the 2019 Division II Player of the Year (Pilar Echeverria).

MEN'S SOCCER, 2019
The 2019 UIndy men's soccer team will be remembered as the team that not only got the program's first NCAA Tournament win, but the club that put together one of the most remarkable postseason runs in all of DII soccer.

Led by All-American Javier Steinwascher, UIndy earned the ninth seed in the 10-team NCAA Super Region Three bracket, just making the field. However, the Hounds took down four talented region foes, including fourth-ranked Lake Erie on their home field in the regional semifinal, 2-0. UIndy went on to shut out No. 17 Maryville 1-nil to capture the regional championship and punch its ticket to the Final Four.

The Greyhounds would go on to earn the No. 4 ranking in the season's final coaches poll. Ben Rohder (1st team), Vincent Stone (2nd), Aba Phutin (3rd) and Alejandro Steinwascher (3rd) would all join Javi on the All-GLVC list, while the latter finished as the DII leader in assists with a school-record 19 helpers.

MEN'S BASKETBALL, 2014-15
In one of the most successful runs in program history, the UIndy men's basketball team strung together six NCAA tournament appearances rom 2011-16, averaging nearly 22 wins per season along the way.

But no one season stood out more than the 2014-15 campaign. That year, the Hounds had a start for the ages, winning each of their first 17 games while earning its second-ever No. 1 ranking in the process. UIndy went on to notch victories against Michigan Tech and Lewis at the NCAA Midwest Regional to earn its first-ever "Sweet 16" berth.

The team featured one of the most talented starting fives in recent Greyhound memory, as Joe Lawson (19.2 ppg, 7.1 rpg), Jordan Loyd (15.6 ppg, .420 3FG%), Brennan McElroy (10.4 ppg, 8.2 rpg), Lucas Barker (9.5 ppg, 7.5 apg) and Dai-Jon Parker (9.4 ppg, 1.8 spg) all ranked highly in various GLVC statistical categories.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS, 2010-19
By any measure, the Greyhounds had a heck of a decade. But perhaps more than anywhere else, they succeeded in the classroom.

From Jessica Canary (women's basketball, 2010) at the start of the decade to Alyssa Spears (volleyball, 2019) just this past month, UIndy racked up 51 Academic All-America® accolades in the 2010s, good for eighth among all Division II institutions. Fifteen Greyhounds garnered multiple Academic All-America® nods in that span, highlighted by three-time honorees Maura Donahue (women's swimming & diving, 2011-13), Katharina Keilich (women's golf, 2017-19) and Austin Hogan (men's track & field, 2017-19).

The Hounds dominated the GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year list in the twenty-teens as well. UIndy totaled 37 such laurels the last 10 years, with Bellarmine University and its 23 recipients a distance second.

UIndy can also claim three of the last 10 women to win the GLVC Paragon Award -- the league's top honor -- with Kyleigh Turner (volleyball, 2009-10), Jenny Konop (women's golf, 2013-14) and Annika Haynes (women's golf, 2017-18) earning the honor.

The Hounds tacked on a GLVC-best five NCAA Elite 90 Award winners in the past decade, with Allison Tyler (women's golf, 2010) and Kennedy Holtsclaw (women's golf, 2019) joining the three previously aforementioned Hounds as honorees.

BASEBALL, 2012
The 2012 UIndy baseball team gave the program its second-ever "College World Series" appearance, winning 46 total games and a GLVC title in the process. After losing their opening-round game of the GLVC Tournament that year, the Hounds leaned on their tremendous pitching depth to author an impressive nine-game tear in capturing both the GLVC and Midwest Region crowns for the first time since 2000. Six different pitchers earned wins during the run, including Phil Wheeler's no-hitter in the GLVC semifinal, first ever at the conference tournament.

But it was senior Donovan Drake that was the staff's ace. The Whiteland, Ind., native was voted All-America First Team after compiled a 1.67 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 91 2/3  innings before going on to pitch in the Atlanta Braves organization.

Additionally, longtime Greyhound skipper Gary Vaught, who got his 600th win at UIndy that season, was named Midwest Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association.

WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD, 2014
The UIndy women's team had a number of successes spread throughout the last 10 years, making this one of the toughest sports to narrow down. The Greyhounds racked up five GLVC outdoor team titles and had 10 All-America performance in the twenty-teens, but when the program's lone national champion of the decade comes in 2014, it's tough to argue against the 2013-14 campaign.

Russian-import Tatiana Zhuravleva captured the women's fourth-ever individual national title at the 2014 NCAA DII Outdoor Championships, winning the discus with a school-record toss of 56.10 meters. Zhuravleva also placed eighth in the shot put at Indoor Nationals, won GLVC event titles in the discus and both the indoor and outdoor shot puts and was named the league's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

Farin Hickman (hammer throw, weight throw) and LaTisha Martin (outdoor 400m, indoor 200 and 400) added five more conference gold medals that year, while Lissette Mendivil took runner-up honors at Outdoor Nationals, finishing right behind Zhuravleva in the discus to help the Hounds share 14th place overall.

MEN'S TENNIS, 2018
The Hounds put together a special spring season in 2018, tearing through the postseason to set a program first with a "Final Four" appearance. UIndy and its deep lineup swept through the GLVC quarter and semifinals before capturing its third straight conference crown with a 5-1 win against No. 21 Drury.

UIndy then kicked off an historic NCAA Tournament run that didn't stop until the national semis. The Greyhounds took down nationally-ranked Wayne State, Hawaii Hilo and Washburn before finally falling to No. 1 Barry, 5-3.

GLVC Scholar Athlete of the Year Nils Hoffacker matched the program record for singles wins in a season (28) while Matej Kostadinov was named the team MVP after compiling an undefeated 18-0 record in singles competition.

VOLLEYBALL, 2012
The 2012 UIndy volleyball team is not only one of the best of the decade, but one of the most successful squads in program history. The Greyhounds won 31 matches – the third-highest total in UIndy history – on the way to their first trip to the national semifinal.

Kristina Kerrigan capped her outstanding Greyhound career with an AVCA All-America First Team nod, while sophomore setter Meghan Binkerd earned the first All-America honor of her career. UIndy advanced to the national championships after sweeping its way through the Midwest regional, held at Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.

MEN'S LACROSSE, 2019
In just its fourth season of existence, the UIndy men's lacrosse program made history in the spring of 2019 by becoming the fastest team ever to win multiple NCAA tournament games. After earning the No. 3 seed in the South Region, the Greyhounds won consecutive overtime games against Queens (NC) and Belmont Abbey to advance to the national semifinal.

Led by three All-Americans and DII Coach of the Year Greg Stocks, UIndy also became the second-fastest team to reach the national semis. Senior Parker Kump graduated as the program's all-time leading point-getter with 211, while fellow-program-starters Matthew Johnson and Shawn Kimble received All-America Honorable Mention after their senior campaigns, while Kump was placed on the third team. Kump also added USILA Scholar All-America accolades to his resume after graduation.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING, 2010
In the midst of an impressive run of top-12 finishes at Nationals, the Greyhounds matched their third-highest showing at the 2010 NCAA DII Championships. Led by freshman-phenom Maura Donahue and her four individual All-America performances, UIndy racked up 171 points to take ninth place among the nation's best. Donahue would go on to amass 19 combined All-America nods (top-eight finishes) in her career, good for a program record that still stands today.

Under the guidance of longtime head coach Gary Kinkead, the Hounds would cap a string of 12 consecutive top-12 finishes at Nationals in 2012. They returned to prominence in the latter part of the decade, highlighted by a 15th-place showing last spring.

WRESTLING, 2014
On the heels of its first-ever NCAA Super Regional title, the wrestling team set a new program benchmark with an eighth-place finish at the 2014 DII championships. Four Greyhounds earned All-America status, including Jeff Weiss' team-best third-place showing. Cameryn Brady (sixth), Evan Wooding (fifth) and Alex Johns (seventh) also etched their names in the program annals as All-Americas.

Head coach Jason Warthan was named the Super Region 2 Coach of the Year, guiding seven national qualifiers. Josh Kieffer Shelden Struble and Josh and Justin Kieffer also qualified for the championships, with the latter claiming the regional title at 141.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY, 2018
The Greyhounds completed a historic season in 2018, winning their first GLVC title since 1992. The team's 41-point victory ended USI's seven-year championship run, earning head coach Brad Robinson GLVC Coach of the Year honors. UIndy had five runners inside the top 20, including All-GLVC performers Lauren Bailey (third), Mickayla Wenzel (eighth) and Briana Leonard (15th).

UIndy went on to garner their best finish under Robinson to date at the NCAA Midwest Regional, climbing to seventh overall in the field of 29 teams. Several Greyhounds finished in the top 64, with two claiming all-region honors. Bailey claimed 17th in the field, while Wenzel crossed in 12th. Wenzel's final time of 22:09.0 rounded out her Greyhound career with a new personal record, and Bailey's 22:16.2 fueled a 71-place jump from the previous year.

SOFTBALL, 2015
The Greyhound softball program racked up an average of 44 wins and a .759 winning percentage per year over the past decade, but it was the 2015 club that stood out most. Led by UIndy all-time greats Morgan Foley, Casey Williamson and Taylor Russell, the Hounds swept through the NCAA Midwest Regional, took down top-ranked Missouri-St. Louis in the Super Regional and no-hit eventual national-champ North Georgia in the team's second-ever "World Series" appearance.

Foley (first team), Williamson (second team) and Russell (second team) each garnered All-America accolades that season, while Foley went on to amass the second-highest career strikeout total in Division II history.

MEN'S TRACK & FIELD, 2012
Head Coach Scott Fangman's men's track & field team had one of its most successful stints ever during the 2011-12 academic year. The Hounds swept both GLVC Championship meets in dominating fashion while placing in the top 11 at both indoor and outdoor Nationals.

Eight different Greyhounds combined for 14 All-America honors combined between the indoor and outdoor campaigns. Ryan Smith led the way with three, placing fifth at Nationals in the hammer, weight and indoor shot, while fellow-thrower (and current UIndy assistant coach) Matt Royer was the national runner-up in both the hammer and weight throw events.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE, 2019
The 2019 women's lacrosse team won a program-record 18 games, earning its second straight NCAA Midwest Regional berth. The fourth season in program history saw the Greyhounds clean up at the GLIAC postseason banquet, as the team earned five major awards.

UIndy went a perfect 12-0 in league play to claim its first regular-season GLIAC crown before winning its second straight tournament title in May. The Greyhounds earned the No. 4 seed in the NCAA Midwest Regional, advancing to the national tournament for the second consecutive season. Eight Greyhounds were named IWLCA All-Region before McClure hauled in her second straight IWLCA All-America award.

The team rose as high as No. 11 in the IWLCA national coaches poll during the season and finished at No. 12 in the final set of rankings.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY, 2013
The 2013 men's cross country team followed a fourth-place performance at the GLVC Championships with a decade-best 10th-place showing at the NCAA DII Midwest Regional meet.

Junior Alex Cushman led the Hounds with a lofty third-place finish at regionals, earning a trip to the NCAA DII Championships in Spokane, Wash. There, he nearly secured All-America honors after finishing 49th among the nation's best.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL, 2010
The Greyhounds ripped off 24 straight wins to start the 2009-10 campaign, setting a new program mark for consecutive victories. They finished conference play with a stellar 16-2 mark to secure the GLVC East Division title while also earning their third NCAA Tournament berth in as many years.

Three Greyhounds earned all-conference honors, with Sam Meissel (19.2 ppg, 5.0 rpg) being voted GLVC Player of the Year and LeeAnn Freeland garnering GLVC Coach of the Year accolades.

MEN'S GOLF, 2018
The men's golf team had one of its best postseason runs ever in 2017-18. The Hounds secured the program's record 16th conference title, as GLVC Player of the Year Graham McAree snatched his second career conference medal in dramatic fashion. UIndy then earned its first regional title in 10 years before advancing to match play at the NCAA DII Championships for the first time since the current format was adopted in 2011.

After winning his match-play pairing at Nationals with a three-under 69, McAree finished the year with a 72.3 scoring average, good for second in the UIndy single-season annals.

WOMEN'S SOCCER, 2019
The women's soccer club authored one of the best Cinderella stories in UIndy history in 2019. After being picked to finish 10th in the GLVC Preseason Coaches Poll, the Greyhounds went on to set a program record with 11 conference wins before advancing to the "Sweet 16" in the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.

The Hounds led the GLVC with seven all-conference selections, as well as collecting GLVC Offensive Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year.

MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING, 2018
Under the guidance of third-year head coach Jason Hite, the UIndy men's swimming & diving teams orchestrated a special season in 2017-18, solidifying a foundation that is sure to support the program for years to come.

The postseason began with the Hounds taking down national-power Drury to win their first-ever GLVC title while sweeping the conference's major awards. That momentum carried right into the NCAA Championships, as UIndy set a new program best with a third-place finish among the nation's best competition. Hite was later named the 2018 CSCAA DII Coach of the Year, and he would go on to lead the Hounds to a repeat third-place finish at Nationals a year later.

WOMEN'S TENNIS, 2019
The Greyhounds capped their best season ever with a NCAA Tournament run that didn't stop until the Final Four. After fourth-place finishes by Hanna Volikova (singles) and Nikol Alexeeva and Anna Novikova (doubles) at the ITA Cup in the fall, the Hounds rolled through the spring season with an unblemished record. They swept all three matches at the GLVC Championship and did not lose a single match in the NCAA Tournament until falling to third-ranked Lynn in the national semifinal.

FOOTBALL, 2012
The UIndy football program's recent run of conference titles and playoff appearances can be traced back to the 2012 squad. With then third-year head coach Bob Bartolomeo at the helm, UIndy rolled off 10 consecutive wins on the way to capturing the inaugural GLVC championship (it's first of six in the decade) and securing not only its first-ever DII postseason appearance, but it's first playoff win. The Hounds went on the win six conference titles and six playoff appearances in the decade.

More #HoundsOfTheDecade will be added here as they are released on Facebook and Twitter.
